Sen. Bob Menendez, Democrat of New Jersey facing a twice-superseded indictment on corruption charges, gave a speech in the Senate today complaining about that. "Senator Menendez, Charged in Bribery Scheme, May Blame His Wife" ( New York Times ). And in the opening statements of Sen. Bob M...

Re: The (no longer) much too early 2024 election thread

Mark Joseph Stern expects SCOTUS will restore the legislature's map for this year's election in accordance with the "Purcell principle" (which says maps shouldn't be changed too close to an election) but there's a good chance that next year the Court will use this case to scrap what remai...

Trump says he’ll arrange his own transportation. I’ll bring my plane, too. I plan on keeping it for another four years.
Love Biden's low-key sense of humor!
Biden also said, "I hear you're free on Wednesdays," but June 27, the date of the debate on CNN, is actually a Thursday.

Re: The (no longer) much too early 2024 election thread

I like this effort to bring the truth about Donald Trump's presidency out of the memory hole: Trump's first term turned out much worse than anyone feared. He did the mean tweets and some racist stuff. He deployed armed, masked, and unbadged federal agents to grab citizens off the streets. He did his...

In fact, those are rare bright spots in a long, bleak history . The only years that saw a decrease in the number of fatal drug overdoses in the past five decades (1974-2023) were 1976 (the last year of Gerald Ford's presidency), 1977-1980 (all four years of Jimmy Carter's presidency), 1987 (the seve...

Drug overdose deaths in the United States increased every year from 2019 through 2022, i.e., for the last two years of Donald Trump's presidency and the first two years of Joe Biden's presidency, but ABC reports that they fell in 2023, and while that's only a 3% decrease from the 111,000 deaths in 2...

I think so. The deal seems to have been that in exchange for Johnson allowing a vote on the foreign aid package, Democrats would block Greene's attempt to oust him. Democrats kept their word. But disagreements and criticism are otherwise to be expected.
