Re: The Russia Investigations and other Trump-related cases

On the other hand, I saw a report on TV this evening that Weisselberg will be pleading guilty to all 15 counts against him and will be required, if called, to testify as a prosecution witness in the criminal trial of the Trump Organization this fall.

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

Wait a minute: in addition to the Inflation Reduction Act, the past week also saw Congress pass and President Biden sign legislation that will fix the longstanding budget woes of the U.S. Postal Service? Did anyone know this was even in the works?

Re: 2022 U.S. Congressional (and Other) Elections

It's just one survey, but the the latest poll from Marquette University finds that in Wisconsin, the Democratic challenger Mandela Barnes leads the incumbent Republican Senator Ron Johnson in his bid for reelection by a 51%-44% margin. The same poll in June found Barnes leading by 2%. The party that...

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

Multiple Republicans today are accidentally arguing that the Biden administration is arresting too many criminals. Here's one example:

Apparently former Ambassador Haley would prefer it if these terrorists were not caught?

Re: 2022 U.S. Congressional (and Other) Elections

Mehmet Oz, the Republican candidate for Senate from Pennsylvania (even though he mostly lives in New Jersey; only one of the ten properties that Oz owns is even in the Keystone State) apparently thinks he's running to be Pennsylvania's governor. Speaking on the right-wing Newsmax channel today in an...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

Former Vice President Mike Pence today issued a statement in which he said that if the January 6th Committee invited him to testify, he would consider doing so, but because there are "three co-equal branches of government ... I’d have to reflect on the unique role I was serving in as Vice Presi...

This is an interesting effort at illustrating Donald Trump's various efforts to illegally stop Joe Biden from becoming President:

In January 2021, I expected we'd soon see a picture like this. But for much of the subsequent 18 months, I thought we never would:

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

Meant to note this yesterday. Even though someone I know personally wrote a good play about the evils of drone warfare, it's never been clear to me why it seemed to get more criticism than other kinds of U.S. military actions. But there's been almost no reporting on how the Biden administration has ...

Re: Trump Espionage and Obstruction Investigation

This is a very helpful explanation of how the classification status of the documents will be determined. In order to prevent Donald Trump from graymailing the United States (i.e., from putting the Dept. of Justice in the position where the only way that Trump can be prosecuted is by revealing sensi...

Re: Trump Espionage and Obstruction Investigation

The New York Times reports that as part of this investigation, the FBI interviewed former White House officials including Counsel Pat Cippolone and Deputy Counsel Patrick Philbin. Philbin apparently testified that he's tried to get Donald Trump to turn over certain materials to the National Archives...

A legal reporter at Slate writes: "Florida appeals court affirms an order prohibiting a parentless 16-year-old from terminating her pregnancy on the grounds that she has not proved she is mature enough to get an abortion. So the state will force her to have a child instead." The appeals co...

I meant to respond to this earlier, but most if not all of the groups cited in that article are genuine, if rather radical, progressive groups. I question their conclusion that the bill will do more harm than good, but share some of the concerns that they express. In any event, the House passed the...

Re: Trump Espionage and Obstruction Investigation

Asha Rangappa says it is indeed normal for government employees to be issued a second passport, and that while normally they would relinquish that upon exiting public service, it wouldn't be surprising to find that ex-presidents get to keep theirs. Barb McQuade says that the FBI often takes passport...

Donald Trump says that the FBI also took his "three passports (one expired)." Why would he have (at least) two in the first place? Would he had one passport as a private citizen and another one as the president? How does a president go through customs and immigration, anyway? And if presid...

Re: Trump Espionage and Obstruction Investigation

We've been citing Marcy Wheeler a lot, so here's one more interesting observation she's made: one reason that the Dept. of Justice wanted to see Mar-a-Lago surveillance video may be that the government regulations (which Wheeler cites) concerning the storage of top secret documents in a non-secure l...
