Re: Trump Indicted by Manhattan District Attorney

For whatever it's worth (and I have no idea), here's a New York Times profile of Melania Trump as regards this trial.

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

The first time I heard of Pete Buttigieg was when someone shared this April 2019 video in which he announced that he was exploring a presidential run. What resonated for me was the lines, "There's no such thing as 'again' in the real world" and "We can't look for greatness in the past...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions

And the Dept. of Justice is still charging people for their actions on January 6th. In this case, there's a quasi-celebrity connection, because the defendant, Tyler Campanella, is the stepson of a matchmaker named Siggy Flicker, who was in the "cast" of two reality TV shows, Why Am I Stil...

Re: Trump Indicted by Manhattan District Attorney

Earlier Donald Trump today posted about how he was surprised that he can only strike a limited number of potential jurors. But obviously if defendants could strike an unlimited number of jurors, their trials would never get past jury selection!

Re: Russia's Invasion of Ukraine

The U.S. House of Representatives is finally going to vote on an aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. Speaker Johnson says the vote will be Saturday evening. It must then be passed by the U.S. Senate before President Biden, who today issued a statement of support for the bill, can sign it in...

Re: Chaos in Congress

I spent so much time writing this that I figured I'd be scooped! Finally, today, April 16, some 63 days after the House of Representatives voted (214-213) to impeach the Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, the House transmitted the articles of impeachment to the Senate. And today, April...

Re: Elon's Twitter

This story has nothing to do with Elon Musk, but I note it here because I think it echoes what happened with Twitter: last year, the Park Record , a small newspaper in Park City, Utah made its first ever reference to Matthew Prince, the billionaire who co-founded the tech company Cloudfare. The Par...

Re: The (no longer) much too early 2024 election thread

Al Pacino and Jimmy Kimmel are two different people.

(Donald Trump is still worked up about this, perhaps because of this.)

Re: The challenges ahead (Biden's America)

It appears that the only time Lee Chatfield, the former Republican speaker of Michigan's statehouse, was previously mentioned in these forums was when he did the right thing: in 2020, he condemned the men who plotted to kidnap Michigan's Democratic governor, Gretchen Whitmer: The Republican Speaker...

Sen. Bob Menendez, Democrat of New Jersey facing a twice-superseded indictment on corruption charges, gave a speech in the Senate today complaining about that. "Senator Menendez, Charged in Bribery Scheme, May Blame His Wife" ( New York Times ). Dave Weigel : "The Henny Youngman Stra...

Re: The Russia Investigations and other Trump-related cases

Donald Trump colluded with Russia. ... I can't believe that point needs to be restated, but a National Public Radio reporter named Uri Berliner has written a column for the The Free Press titled "I’ve Been at NPR for 25 Years. Here’s How We Lost America’s Trust." In that piece, Berliner n...

Re: Trump Indicted by Manhattan District Attorney

"You'd think having your company lose almost 20% of its value in a single day (again) would be enough to keep someone awake." To be fair, Truth Social stock has rebounded a little over the past couple hours and is only down 17% for the day now. But it's down about 65% from its peak of $74...

Re: Trump Indicted by Manhattan District Attorney

Some 15-20 years ago, I was a regular reader of blogs by a number of medievalist professors, whose writing came to my attention through Tolkien connections. Some like Michael Drout and Scott Nokes blogged under their own names. A number of others used pseudonyms. On one occasion, one of these folks,...

Re: Chaos in Congress

Last week, Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters that he would be transmitting the articles this week, but CNN now reports it will be next week. So that means at least 61 days after the House voted toi impeach, and more than twice as long as then-Speaker Pelosi held the articles for President Donald ...
