Julian Fellowes insists almost all of the storylines (including the dead lover in Ep 1) are based on actual historical cases. Granted, they didn't all happen in the same house, but they did happen.

Just a brief reminder that the only reason we have LotR as all is because the publishers were unwilling to follow up The Hobbit with a book that didn't contain Hobbits. ;) And it is safe to say that to 99% of moviegoers*, Hobbits are the differentiating factor between Tolkien and other fantasy. *63....
