Re: Musicals and Operas

Dave, that sounds like an excellent choice! It's always a good thing to support local theater.... there's so much amazing theater in the world that goes un- or under recognized because it doesn't have big names or the Broadway stamp. (Not to mention all the terrible theater that makes tons of money ...

Re: Musicals and Operas

Ah, just the thread we need! Congratulations on your first outing as director! On the one hand I can see the justification for moving the walls if the idea is that Don Quixote is so free in his mind that the prison walls cease to exist for him? But I also do understand your point, and haven't seen t...

Seriously, what am I supposed to do with my life now? :( Well, I spent the entire month following reading interviews and essays trying to come to grips with the ending, and that didn't quite work. Your way is better. I don't think the Chief got a full scene so much as he got a line stating his inte...

Yes, well, they seem to have more and more "nifty" ideas as the show goes on. I'm still skeptical about season four in general. (Except for Gaeta's arc. I love Gaeta.) I also love Anders! And I absolutely buy Starbuck/Anders. I have no problem with Starbuck/Apollo, just that it doe...

Sorry, "Unfinished Business" was the boxing/flashback episode.
I think the rationale for the Hendrix is that David Eick and Ron Moore thought it was a nifty idea.

Can I just say that reading this series of posts was terribly amusing. I'm pretty sure that's the exact emotional journey I took while watching, too. I look forward to your season 4 reactions. If you really, truly want to know about Starbuck: Yes, she does come back, but there's kind of a caveat. Al...

Deus ex machinas are always fun! There were several events in season one which we are explicitly pushed to believe were "acts of god". That is true, but I somehow managed to completely ignore that. It didn't gibe with my sense of the show nor my inclinations, so I brushed it to the side an...

I truly could not be more honoured by your lovely comments, especially given who they're coming from. I'm just excited when anyone is willing to listen to me talk about all this. To expand on a point you make: one of the things that separates LOTR from virtually all other high/epic fantasy is that t...

I don't like Gaius as a person, but James Callis is so excellent that I find him compelling anyway. I'm guessing people do think he's a bit batty but write it off as being the quirks of genius. I'll be interested in your reaction to the finale and to season 4 as a whole. The show really is far more ...

I actually started writing this post last year was actually active. It never felt quite right and still doesn't. I suspect that after all this time it is overwritten, so if the phrasing is awkward, that's why. I hope it answers the question posed at least somewhat. Seeing as how it is now Armistice ...

I understood the protagonist to be the most active character, the one who moved the story along. In this case, I would argue that LOTR switches protagonists part way through. In the first two books, it is Frodo. Frodo is the one who must leave the Shire, the one who actively chooses to take on the Q...

Agreed. I also think this series has made one improvement over the previous years and that's the having the running arc with the crack in time. I enjoy a good one off, which they of course can do brilliantly, but I really like the hinting at something larger, that ominous quality running through. My...

I quite like it. I've never purchased a Tolkien calendar anyway, but it's sort of refreshing to see something that isn't going for 'realism'. I don't see why fantasy art should be tied down to that standard anyway. It reminds me a bit of a Pukel Men, more of a Ghân-buri-Ghân style than a Minas Tirith.

Elf and Man met death openly, although it could be argued that both died needlessly. Fingolfin need not have given in to his fearful rage and Théoden need not have ridden onto the field of battle. These two were both engaged in what seemed a hopeless war, their forces outnumbered, they must stare i...

I'm not sure of the the other things, but steepling your hands is definitely not the right answer. You might be making a gesture that I'm not entirely sure how to describe. It's like waving the candlelight towards yourself. The staging here probably couldn't be completely accurate anyway because you...

I am so glad to see you back here, although I wish with all my heart it hadn't been with that news. You have always been someone I wished I knew better. That post was simply lovely. Sam's power as a character and as a person seems to me to be in his unfailing faith that "above all shadows rides...

One month later, I'm still really upset about the BSG finale. It really comes down to expectations, I suppose. It wasn't actually a bad episode, but to come to that after the heights they reached in Season 1 is just terrible. I do wish they hadn't started setting up "mysteries". Moore shou...

I would subscribe to that theory in either form -- too powerful and too open to temptation. Could it also have to do with being the bearer of a Ring? I'm not sure where in the timeline that happened, but I wonder if the power of the Rings trumps having any sort of royal power. Gandalf, Elrond, and G...

I'm really surprised there's no discussion of the finale. Works for me, though, because I just finished watching it and I have thoughts. Lots of thoughts. Yes, this post is going to be spoiler full. First, regarding the above discussion about Tigh and Six, am I the only one who was rather disturbed ...
