Yes, they deserve justice but sometimes life is unfair, if you believe there is a GOD out there let him be the judge. I'm sure there is a place in the afterlife for people like that. That would be the ultimate attempt of a consolation for the victims, if all efforts to do justice fail or the perpet...

Today a new case of abuse was made known in the German media. A particularly reactionary Bishop is accused of having beaten lots of children in the 70ies and 80ies when he was a priest and looked after children in a home. Several now adult victims spoke up and on the radio I listened to an interview...

In Germany the RCC is organised in sectors and governed by a Cardinal. The Cardinal in the Cologne sector has announced a brochure with information for the victims for this week. He said in a press conference that justice should be done (whatever that means) and the victims should receive every supp...

I don't see the celibacy in itself as a problem, but the Catholic church has been insisting on it despite all debates. Some years ago there was a movement at the basis of the Catholic church in Germany "We are the church", if I remember it correctly, and one of the demands was to revise ce...

The Germans feel ignored because the Pope didn't mention them in his letter. His spokesman said that the apology to the Irish can be seen as an apology to all people concerned, no matter the country. For the time being there's not one day on which no new cases of child abuse are reported in the Germ...

Which I see as watching, urgently, from the sidelines, not bending minds and events to its purposes. If my children did everything rightly and prudently, but only because I was thinking for them and controlling them, I wouldn't be a good parent, because they wouldn't be ready to grow into independe...

Murderous children

In 1993 the 10 year old Jon V. and Robert T. cruelly killed a two year old boy in Liverpool. They had got a life sentence, but were released from prison after eight years by order of the European Court of Human Rights. Now Jon V. has been arrested again and the reason hasn't yet officially been reve...

Alan Doherty

Last night I've been to the "Irish Spring Festival", which is touring through Germany this month. One of the acts was Alan Doherty together with his new project "Skellig). He's the solo flutist in the LOTR trilogy and the presenter said Alan has hung his copy of the "Oscar" ...

Congratulations to both teams for this outstanding match. Sometimes it's a shame that there can't be two winners.

Whereas German TV is all about the German athletes (now for the Germans, this were great games - also think of the size of the country...) and it bothers me. Absolutely. I dislike this either. And tonight I'll make sure to watch the hockey match. And today I want to see the figure skating gala - no...

I don't want to derail this lovely thread so I won't go on except to say, I have no rational reason for hope, but on the other hand I do seem to be a relentlessly "glass half full" person which at times makes me want to shake myself and yell at myself but there you are. I know how you fee...

Dear Sass, when I saw your name here, I was really happy, but like everyone else here, the happiness quickly turned into sadness and speechlessness at your news. :( Thank you for your great and moving post. I hardly ever found someone who wasted more than a couple of sentences on Sam because o...

No worries, it would be a true miracle, if the Canadians couldn't beat the Germans. I felt sorry for the Canadians, when I just read about their defeat in the newspaper. So much pressure, when the silver medal isn't good enough. It's so much better when the athlets are surprised at their own ...

Yes, to assisted suicide, No to euthanasia. I think to have a choice makes things look different. People might never use the drugs, but they are available, if the situation becomes unbearable and this thought might be comforting enough to enable the person to hold on. In Germany euthanasia as well a...

Oh, and Lhaewin, I think the lack of patriotism is quite typical for Germans of "our" generation (pre-reunification). I'm glad, I'm not the only one :)

I saw ski-cross for the first time and was astonished. One athlet fell because of the other's mistake - and there were some guys kind of attacking one another.

Nin, I'm also lacking patriotism and I'd also prefer to watch Eurosport instead of the German channels. Last night we saw the cross-skiing competition and I found myself rooting for the brave Swedish athlet who ended up third (the German guy won silver) - and the presenter was talking loads of blah....
