Re: Short Stories
I wish I could read it!
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: Short Stories
Is that supposed to be legible? It’s minuscule.

Apologies for the stretch but it needs to be this long to be readable!

Re: Short Stories
And yet it still betrays our own prejudices with regard to what we think life must be and what we consider "habitable" environments. Yes, well done!
The dumbest thing I've ever bought
was a 2020 planner.
"Does anyone ever think about Denethor, the guy driven to madness by staying up late into the night alone in the dark staring at a flickering device he believed revealed unvarnished truth about the outside word, but which in fact showed mostly manipulated media created by a hostile power committed to portraying nothing but bad news framed in the worst possible way in order to sap hope, courage, and the will to go on? Seems like he's someone we should think about." - Dave_LF

This is They're Made out of Meat by Terry Bisson, published in 1991 and nominated for Nebula. I feel certain that Prim knew it, and loved it.

If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Yes, I've read it on these boards somewhere before; maybe she was even the one who posted it...

Actually it was posted by ...
Hidden text.
But Prim did specifically respond by talking about how great the author was."Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Re: Short Stories
Don't feel bad; that makes you a strong candidate to be a major world leader!
Re: Short Stories
Great; another author recommendation from Prim! (Makes a quick note)
And that was great!

In this Twitter thread, the Nebula and Hugo nominee Shiv Ramdas chronicles his brother-in-law's misadventure with a truck full of rice, and it's the best short story I read all year.

Re: Short Stories
Tor made available a short story by Martha Wells set in the Murderbot universe after the 4th novella, Exit Strategy. (Which is still weeks away in my Libby queue.)

Once the series is complete, I think I'll get a boxed set from the local bookstore.
