Things have gone so well for me, but my mind is apparently not able to accept all of that, and I"m struggling. I just want to be able to perform as everyone around me would like, but I'm afraid I won't live up to those expectations.

Well, I know I cannot, so I am struggling with just trying to do anything close... and it's hard...

You're outside your comfort zone, hal, but that's the right place to be. The fastest way to learn new abilities is to put yourself in a situation where you're going to need them, and trust your ability to learn them as you go. But the beginning can be frightening.

Nobody around you knew it all when they first started out.

You can do this. But you'll be in my prayers all the same.

You can do far more than you think you can, hal. You certainly can do more in your chosen field than I would ever dream of being able to do!

Move forward with confidence that you will learn what you need to learn and do what you need to do. And do try to enjoy the journey.

(And prayers, of course.)

I think I'm at a point in life where I have to reset my expectations. That doesn't mean anything bad, but it's very hard, and depressing in some respects, and depressing is something I really need to get away from. I think I'm also struggling with living alone again after staying with my family for a couple of years... which makes everything harder. I didn't think that would be an issue since I was dying to get away from them at the time

... but I find myself feeling very alone far too often, and with nothing to do... outside of homework of course

... but that only gets me so far.

Roommates? A blessing and a curse, I am sure. But a good roomie could at least provide you with that familiar face, at the end of the day.

(I had 12 roommates, the 12th of which was mr. anth.

He has been the best so far! But I had a wonderful roommate for 5 years, and was so grateful for her. )

It might also give you the option of living in a larger, nicer place. One with room to invite a few people over, etc.

I liked the way it rebuts the "oh, just try harder to be happy!" line of thinking, which can do as much harm as good.

You are accomplishing amazing things despite the melancholy you carry (or that you must slog through). You should feel pride in your achievements. And we're proud of you, too!

I like that list, Teremia and agree with most of it. (I take issue with the "no watching drama-emotional-soaps" bit, though.

)

I like how it has several items that advise professional and medical help, including getting your blood-work done and talking to a counselor.

I am a naturally happy person, but I have friends and family for whom melancholy is the norm. I also have had my own experience with deep, clinical depression. So I know what it feels like...and I also learned some ways to defeat it, or at least beat it back.

Hal, keep on keeping on.

I like that list, too, Teremia, and I definitely agree with #17.

I do not suffer from clinical depression, but I have a tendency toward melancholy. Therefore, I avoid drama. It's one reason I'm always reluctant to watch movies or read fiction. I actually have to be in need of expressing the emotion of sadness for some reason. (You know, sometimes emotions get clogged up, and I need to help them out.)
