I'll put this here, rather than start a new thread, but this is extremely cool. I know that some Tolkien scholars criticize Colbert, but I don't think that anyone does more to bring arcane Tolkien knowledge to the masses. And in this case, connecting Tolkien to the most current popular music.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

I'm pretty sure that the sentence "Some X criticize Y" is true for any values of X and Y.Voronwë the Faithful wrote:I know that some Tolkien scholars criticize Colbert, but I don't think that anyone does more to bring arcane Tolkien knowledge to the masses.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

OMG. Breathtaking.
Tom's comment: "He is such a total nerd. Which is great for all of us."
Could probably apply that to Tolkien in general. Unless *looking around with a glower and clenching hands* you have some kind of problem with the term "nerd."

“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

These tapestries, based on Tolkien's artwork, are amazing, but the look in Christopher Tolkien's face as he sees them for the first time is one of the most moving things I've ever seen. And the story he tells about the Rivendell painting is quite special as well.

Thats fabulous, but I wish I could have seen more of the tapestries and their creation! Also, CRRT really is very frail now.
