The Tolkien Translation Game!
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Yes
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Possibly this?
There is not that you can do other than resist, either with hope or without it.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Not that one

Is it this one:
This quest may be attempted by the weak with as much hope as the strong.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
akin to Frelga, I went a circuitous route through Hindi, Chinese (traditional), Serbian and Polish.
I'm thinking about establishing a happy stay at the end of my day.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is that Bilbo just before he left Bag End for good?
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
No. But it is Bilbo.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
That's funny, because this quote fits the translation almost perfectly:
I have thought of a nice ending for it: and he lived happily ever after to the end of his days.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
And did he ever repeat this sentiment?
'You just said "your getting shorter": you've obviously been drinking too much ent-draught and not enough Prim's.' - Jude
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Was it this one, in Rivendell after the Council of Elrond?
Books ought to have good endings. How would this do: and they all settled down and lived happily ever after?
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
No.... but you are getting close. One more place where he mentioned his book ending.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Okay, what about this, right after he made an attempt to get the ring back:
Don't adventures ever have an end? I suppose not. Someone else always has to carry on the story. Well, it can't be helped. I wonder if it's any good trying to finish my book?
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
No, now you have moved away from the very close quote you had the previous 2 times.
'You just said "your getting shorter": you've obviously been drinking too much ent-draught and not enough Prim's.' - Jude
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
This one is closer:
I'll do my best to finish my book before you return.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
No.... it’s very very very very similar to your first two quotes. Almost identical, just spoken slightly differently & at a different time than the ones you mentioned.
'You just said "your getting shorter": you've obviously been drinking too much ent-draught and not enough Prim's.' - Jude
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Well, there's this quote before the party, which is word-for-word verbatim the same as the first quote I posted, which was spoken after the party just before he left for good:
I have thought of a nice ending for it: and he lived happily ever after to the end of his days.
Quite a lot, as it turns outInanna wrote:And did he ever repeat this sentiment?
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Gawd, he did repeat it a lot, didn’t he!
So... it is in FOTR, and thus has to be between the party and the fellowship heading out...

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Well, if it's between the party and the fellowship heading out, the only thing I could find is the quote I posted first. If it's not that one, I'm at a loss.
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
It’s right after the quote I just posted as an answer....
