The Tolkien Translation Game!
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
He uses that phrase a lot... Maybe this one:
"You are not wise to be glad of the Yellow Face."

Do we have a new one?
Inanna?
Inanna?

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Is it some unidentified Hobbit at the gate when the travelers first return to the Shire, 'Can’t you read the notice: No admittance between sundown and sunrise?’

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Yes. Just the last sentence “no admittance..”
Cool. Your turn.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
But the curse of the shadow gate that breaks some beggars is at least a promise of fate.
This was significantly reduced from the original, which was two sentences long. Good luck.

Was it spoken by Smaug?

Is it spoken to or by Gorlim?

No and no. But Al is in the right book.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
First I had to remember what it was!
Al was actually in the right chapter. Not only was the original quote significantly reduced from two long sentences to one shorter one, the order of the phrases was reversed.

I think I've found it:
Felagund wrote:Your oaths of faith to me ye may break, but I must hold my bond. Yet if there be any on whom the shadow of our curse has not yet fallen, I should find at least a few to follow me, and should not go hence as a beggar that is thrust from the gates.

You have indeed found it! Impressively well done!

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I thought I would make things easy by including a quote that had a Tolkien-invented word in it that would make it through the translator, but half-way through it got changed to "BARAR" in all-caps.
Here's how it ended up:
Feel free to ask for hints - two keywords survived, and the original has a synonym for "anger".
Here's how it ended up:
Earlier on:Besides using it as a foot, the anger of BARAR is not here.
The original word has the same vowels. Not only does it need to be a foot, but there is no anger of BARAR here.

BARAR? Wow.

Valar?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.
