Many of those trees were my friends, creatures I had known from nut and acorn; many had voices of their own that are lost forever now.

I am going to post this simply for the bizarreness of the translation. Not a single word, or the overall meaning, of the translated sentence relates to the original, except that the original sentence starts with Yes.
