No, the other half.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Here's a possibility:
Gandalf, speaking about Beorn wrote:At any rate, he is under no enchantment but his own.

That's the one.

I dunno about this one; some of the key words remain, but the meaning is completely different. I may need to give lots of hints.
Displays a warning before I will come back here.

Is it from LOTR?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

Is "warning" one of the key words that you referred to before?
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Yes, but it's in a different tense in the original. It's actually a verb in the original, but ended up as a noun in the translation.
(I can give you the exact tense if it will help)

Is it something to do with "Warn of his return"?

Is it Gandalf to Frodo: "‘I am not warning you against leaving an address at the post-office!"
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Nope.
Further hint: in the original, it's "warned".

Is it Merry to the leader of the ruffians in the Shire: ‘We have met before,’ he said to the leader, ‘and I warned you not to come back here.'
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

I think this is going to be a bit of a challenge.
We got a good price for that.
