Cool and useful websites (was Every noise ever)

Post by Frelga »

Edit 10/26 because I realized that a) there is not much to discuss about the site I shared except for how cool it is, and b) that there a so many other single-purpose sites that are funny, useful, creative, or all of the above.

This is a really cool site, and I couldn't find an appropriate thread for it. It gives you a small sample of every conceivable music genre, from soft rock to deep darkspy, grisly deathmetal to Chicago blues, Persian traditional to Polish pop. Clicking on the genre leads to the map of the artists, which leads to Spotify playlists.

http://everynoise.com/engenremap.html
This is an ongoing attempt at an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space, based on data tracked and analyzed for 1536 genres by Spotify. The calibration is fuzzy, but in general down is more organic, up is more mechanical and electric; left is denser and more atmospheric, right is spikier and bouncier.

I found this site once years ago and ended up spending an entire day messing with it. Dangerous stuff!

I decided that I can improve the usefulness of this thread by adding other useful, funny, original websites for your enjoyment.

Yarn is my favorite shiny toy! Enter a movie quote, and it will give you a short clip of just that quote. Now if I could only figure out how to embed it here. https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/78dd4f89-b ... a4e1d587a1

I'm impressed; it found everything I threw at it.

I tried "Lost in time like tears in the rain". No luck unfortunately. :(

What's that from, Al?

My hubby made a list of links to communicate at work. Quotes like "Son, just don't," and several "no way" quotes. :D

P. S. Needless to say, I'd love for everyone to share their favorites.

For me, there's no contest. My favorite movie quote of all time is:

I tried to find two and it couldn't find either one. :(

"It turns out I suddenly find myself needing to know the plural of apocalypse."

and

You know, I used to think that it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, "Wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair? And all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them?"

So now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe.

I only tried the first sentence of that second quote.
I'm not getting anything from quite a few Babylon 5 quotes. :nono:

Maria, it seems to only do very short quotes, a couple seconds, so I'm not surprised that it couldn't find the longer ones.

I was trying short ones like , "Always trust Ivanova!" and "Understanding is a three-edged sword." and "nibbled to death by cats" and "You cannot run out of time" and "not the one, not the one" and "No boom today"

Babylon 5 just isn't in there. :(

Buffy is, I've seen quotes from there quite a bit. Just not the one about the plural of apocalypse.

Yeah, I only tried movies before; it doesn't seem to have access to as many TV shows. I'm curious who they are that they have access to anything at all...

They'd probably claim that very short snips are fair use.
