Wow, that is a TOUGH puzzle!

I think 25 across is ICY (I see).

And 30 across may be ARK (also the abbreviation for Arkansas.)

As for 4 across, a Jewish prayer shawl is a tallit, and the fringes on the shawl (tale/tails possibly??) are called tzitzit, but I can't quite figure out the answer for that one. I considered the possibility of a pun (tallit = tell it, as in telling a tale) but don't see where an abbreviation would fit in there.

Maybe someone else can figure that one out, given the above information!
When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes The Rose.

Eight across might be Peking? (Pekinese)

And if you want help with 28 down, Eve's sons were Cain, Abel and Seth, all of which have four letters... :P

The one about the white knight (25 down) is, I think, 'in', the reverse of the 'knight who said 'ni'', and also the abbreviation for Indiana!

Is there a prize for this? :help:
When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes The Rose.

Wow, those are almost all right, Sunny! I'll fill them in so that the crosses will be easier.

Talit only has one "l" - that's why yours didn't fit.

I've been doing cryptics lately online and finally getting the hang of some of the abbreviations. But the ones on the site I've been going to are Australian, which is a bit frustrating because I've never heard of most of the places in Oz that are solutions, and also they don't give enough crosses. I think the courtesy rule is that half the letters have to be crossed. It's not a whole lot of fun to have a word like revere, and they'll cross two of the e's and nothing else, and the clue will be something like 'wombat caught in Sydney intersection' or something else completely meaningless to me.

But I caught on that "queen" always means there's an 're' in the word, and that directions refer to their own first letter, and so on. So I decided to do a cryptic of my own that was more 'fair' - has more crosses and clues that are not too culture-specific, and where the definition part of the clue for a verb has the same verb form as the solution, like 'ing' or 'ed.'

It was a lot of fun! I did a second one yesterday which I'll put up when you guys finish this one.

Off to insert your answers!

Jn

p.s. "peking" is not correct in the whole, but three of the letters are right so I've added them. Usually one can do that online, I think - get a check of which letters are right.

p.p.s. photobucket is down so we may have to wait a bit for the load

2 across: parts?

14 across: ivy (I.V. = intravenous) :D (Should have gotten THAT one the first time around!)

27 across: Ail ? (Ali, with the letters scrambled.)

And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,

Yes, to all of those ... except 27 across, is almost-almost, since one can't tell the definition from the anagram sometimes, it has to wait for a cross.

Let me put those in and see if photobucket is working again.

Jn

p.s. 2 across is also an almost. You'll get it once you see the cells filled in.

I figured that Tosh and Lord M. and Aravar and Tiggie would all be good at this, and a bunch of others who've done them here in the past, because they're used to seeing them in English publications. We just don't get them in the US, but they're more fun than crosswords, imo.

Yes, and yes, Holby. I've got to go out shopping, though, so I'll have to add those a bit later.

Would it be ok if you did a new post for each update? That way we could work along at our own rate.

I'll be glad to do it, Al, but I don't know what you mean by a new post.

I've been editing in a fresh screencap of the grid as answers come in, because meanwhile everything is on the same page. Do you want me to repeat the grid when a new page begins?

I think what he is saying is, rather than edit the post with each update, just make a new post and leave the old ones behind.

2 down-adjust?
3 down-absent?

If Holby is correct, and I think he is, then it looks like 16 across is 'senate'.

13 across: instep.

Yes, yes, yes yes. All right!

A new grid every time. Eeee ... then I'll have a photobucket full of partially-filled grids, and I'll have to hold them all on my harddrive. And when the puzzle is done and I erase them they'll turn into blank posts. (Though I guess I could delete those posts.)

Usually I'm a bit OC about things like that, trashing files the minute they are obsolete. Would it be OK if I just put a new grid at the top of a new page instead?

Jn

eta: photobucket is down again. Might be awhile before the new solutions go up.

Jn, what we COULD do to make things easier, is right-click on the crossword, AND PRINT THE DAMN THING UP!!

Heck, what's wrong with pencil and paper, guys?? Then you can even work it on the subway, or on your break at work, if your company doesn't allow you internet access to non-work related sites!
