John Henry Cardinal Newman, founder of the Birmingham Oratory, was the leading English Catholic of modern times, and an immense posthumous influence on Tolkien.

It is interesting, fun, and informative, to read contemporary accounts of Newman's Trip to Rome.

You need to wear asbestos gloves and safety glasses, though.

Thanks for the link Soli.

I am Catholic but never knew why he was famous. I just know it's a name a popular boy's high school in Toronto. Girls would go "You studied at Cardinal Newman!" with this  in their eyes. It's our rival school, that's about it. We call them "Newman!" the way Sienfeld does it.

Okay, too much nonsense info there. :P
