Bletchley Park didn't just employ cryptographers. They had many other specialists to interpret (literally as well!) the decoded messages including specialists in the various military units. I have spoken to some over the years. It scarcely needs saying but a large number of them were women.

I take soli's point though that secret work didn't necessarily mean Enigma work. There were plenty of other fields of operation where his skills could be used. That's why I find the silence rather telling.

More seriously the newspaper's reporting his "keen" disposition to work as a cryptographer may be wrong. Tolkien's name is pronounced Tol-keen so this may just have been a note how to.
