I saw that, Tosh. Lucky guy! I've seen quotes for how much he can expect to get for the postcard and fireplace that were petty astounding.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

The question is if you were him, would you sell the fireplace and the postcard, or only one and which one?

I think I would keep the postcard and sell the fireplace.

Interesting. I commented on this at B77 as well.

But apart from that, the part of the article that stunned me was the closer:
Tolkien moved to Oxford in 1972, after Edith died, and sold the Poole bungalow for £23,000 to Stephen Frankel, who put it on the market for £1m in 2006.

Developers Cranbrook Homes (Southern) Ltd bought the property and secured planning permission to replace it with two four-bedroom family homes.

What do you find surprising about that Brian? That seems wholly unremarkable to me. My parents built their house for £7000 in the early 70s and its currently worth about half a million. And by todays standards you could put not 2, but 4 houses on the same plot of land.

Even my house is worth 6 times what I paid for it 12 years ago.

Same with Iavas's parents' house. They bought it for £15K back in the late 70s and is now probably worth £750K.

Also from watching many of the programs about buying and renovating homes, it's quite common to break one large home into two as people can make more money that way.
