House Chaplain Patrick Conroy doesn't resign

Post by RoseMorninStar »

I split this off from the Russian investigation thread. Rose feel free to change the title, and to move or delate the first sentence.
Avenatti might be what is considered a 'bad' lawyer, but what does that make Rudy Giuliani?

There is an obvious push to shore up the Evangelical base. Ryan wanted to get rid of the Catholic Chaplin for no reason (and perhaps replace him with an Evangelical one? Hmmm?) And the federal funding for faith-based organizations. I wonder if that applies to those who worship (and 'donate') the church of Porn Star, um... kitty cat.

I cannot help but think of Jesus and the Temptation in the Desert, in my opinion, many are failing this test miserably.

Paul Ryan was raised as a Catholic. I can't find any clear statement of where he stands now, except that he's adamantly against abortion (and equal pay for women).
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

Yes. Paul Ryan is Catholic and is a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Janesville, WI. His priest has had issues with him and some of his views. Ryan is not of a 'charitable' nature. That is part of what makes his statement to the chaplain (his reason for requesting the resignation) a political move. The Chaplain's 'objectionable prayer' was one of compassion.

Before the tax bill vote:
"In the prayer, the chaplain urged lawmakers to “guarantee that there are not winners and losers under new tax laws, but benefits balanced and shared by all Americans.” Shortly after, he said in the interview with The Times, he was admonished by Mr. Ryan, who views the tax overhaul as his signature achievement.

When the chaplain (Rev. Patrick Conway) asked for the cause he was being asked to resign (as he had no complaints on his record) Ryan made a comment to the effect of 'perhaps it was time for someone other than a Catholic'.

I am no longer religious and I'm not really sure why they have a Chaplain at all, but no one should be dismissed for their religion.
Jesuit's are known to put up a fight.

Ryan has confirmed that Father Conway is not in fact leaving, and I'm not sure what any of this has to do with this thread.

Conway rescinded his resignation in a scathing letter, telling Ryan that he'd have to fire him for cause. Ryan decided it wasn't worth it.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

I wonder about Ryan’s “faith.” His utter contempt for anyone who was so stupid as to have been born into poverty is not within my definition of Christianity.

 Paul Ryan is a fan of Ayn Rand. One of the books Ayn wrote was called "The Virtue of Selfishness". I cannot think of anything more contrary to Christian beliefs! Look up Luke 3:11 for proof:
10“What should we do then?” the crowd asked.

11John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”

12Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

13“Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.

14Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”
BTW, something that Ryan and Trump, who is also a fan of Rand, are choosing to ignore is that Rand was an avowed atheist!

I'm a little confused. LOL. I was wondering if the name of the thread had changed/was evolving. Please (anyone) feel free to change the title.

The point I had tried to make is that due to all of the scandals, namely the Russia investigation & the Stormy Daniels affair (heh) Trump & team are making moves to shore up their base. They are taking a 'Don't pay any attention to the man behind the curtain, look over here.. I have gifts for you' stance to get (mainly Evangelicals) to overlook a multitude of sins/anti-Christian behavior. Many Evangelicals do not consider Catholics to be Christians and I believe Ryan's remarks/request for resignation from Rev. Conway and potential replacement with an Evangelical preacher was a strategic move in that direction.

In addition to being an atheist, Ayn Rand was a hypocrite. According to Wikipedia, "Rand underwent surgery for lung cancer in 1974 after decades of heavy smoking.[97] In 1976, she retired from writing her newsletter and, despite her initial objections, she allowed Evva Pryor, an employee of her attorney, to enroll her in Social Security and Medicare."

As the threadstarter you are the person who has the ability to change the title. I (or the other Sherriffs) technically could do so, but it would be better if you named it something that you thought was appropriate.

Ryan is not part of Trump's team; at best he has been a reluctant ally (and I suspect that he would have been perfectly happy to have Trump resign or be impeached and have a President Pence who is much more closely in tune with him). In any event, the same argument could just as easily been made for any action taken by any Republican, including for instance the entire debates about the repeal of the ACA or the tax cut/reform bill. That is beyond the scope of the other thread which is specifically about the investigations into Russian interference with the election (and possible collusion by the Trump campaign or related individuals/entities with that effort) and other investigations into Trump's conduct, or that of his close associates (like Michael Cohen).

I think he, like so many others up on Capitol Hill, stands with power and money. Everything else is just a means to either of those ends.

I thought I had posted in 'The Russia Investigations and (un)related scandals'?

Ryan is not part of Trump's team and initially opposed him but he has actively worked to advance his agenda. Living in the same state, perhaps I hear more criticism.

You did, and I split it off for the reasons I stated above. Perhaps I will clarify further the name of the Russia investigation thread.
