And the same people that are so anxious to close the door to any Syrian refugees in the United States are the ones that insist on making guns so readily available.

Meanwhile, France, a country that is one-fifteenth the size of the US, with one-fifth of the population, and the country that actually suffered the recent terrorist attack, is still willing to take three times as many refugees as the amount the US has committed to, that these people are so up in arms about.

I heard a radio interview with one of the ER doctors at a hospital in Paris who was on shift when the victims began coming in. He was asked how many patients they received, and it was 27. How many with gunshot wounds? "All. All of them."

The American interviewer asked how many gunshot wounds they would normally see on their shift.

He sounded a little startled by the question. His answer was one—one a year.

To be clear, none of this takes away from the terror of what happened in Paris. ISIS/Daesh/whatever are at the core as close to the force of pure evil by our definition as we've seen in almost a century, and we'll end up dealing with them in all our respective countries no matter what we do about the refugees.


Just - especialy in the US, they are not our greatest threat. We can't react based on pure emotion, we need to act intelligently, and we need to remember that marginalizing Muslim communities in the West is precisely what ISIS wants.

And to be clearer, the kind of reaction that we are seeing from some quarters is precisely what they of many names are looking to provoke. Turning our collective backs on the suffering and plight of the refugees, fanning the flames of Islamaphophia so that it becomes more and more a war against Islam, rather than a war against terrorists, that is exactly what they want. We must not fall into that trap.
