He gave the commencement address the year after I graduated. My class only had Queen Noor. And Margaret Thatcher. And Kofi Annan earlier in the year. I feel like we got shafted.

Law school. Undergrad was at that Other Place in Charlotteville.

I may in fact be going back- I'm in a massive career change into archaeology, and W&M has about the best Colonial Arch department in the country.

EDIT: Oh, commencement. Marshall-Wythe got Warren Burger. Who wasn't a great Chief Justice, but damn, he sure *looked* like one!

Ah, UVA. I think I'm legally obligated to dislike you as a UVA alum (the whole one-sided rivalry, where W&M hates UVA, and UVA is often blissfully ignorant re: all things W&M), but legally obligated to like you as a fellow W&M alum. Confusing stuff.

You can't go wrong by going back there, esp. if you're in any way into colonial history. It's a great school - but this is a rough time for those of us lefty alums who were Nichols fans, as I'm sure you can imagine.

At any rate. Good to know that another W&M alum is in the house. Back when I posted this, I was the only one here, AFAIK.

I hear ya, going to Georgetown makes me wretchedly blase about speakers coming to campus.

Condi was here earlier this month but I would have had to miss a half an hour of work (that's $4.50 I desperately need) and Ron Paul was here the other week but I didn't feel like walking all the way across campus to see him speak.

Mind you our campus is like 100 acres tops.

I'd have done it to see Stewart though.

And my top Prez-VP pick would have to be Jesus-Muhammad. I'd have put it the other way around only Jesus is older.

Mean Gene taught Con Law and Torts when I was there. Very popular prof, tho' I never had him (I did have his wife for Civil Pro.)

I sincerely regret his being hounded out, but I do think the Wren Cross affair was a blunder.

We are so going to have to agree to disagree on that one. William and Mary was where I started coming into my own non-Christian religious/spiritual identity...and that cross grated for four full years, every time I was in the Wren Chapel for non-Christian reasons - W&M Choir performances or practices, PBK initiation, even just personal prayer and reflection, and every non-Christian wedding or other ceremony where people specifically had to request exclusion of that Christian default symbol. It was unconscionable to me that it should be left there for the reasons Nichols provided, most important of which is that it sent a clear, unmistakable message of exclusion to those of us W&M students and alums who are not Christian. Simply unacceptable for a public, state-funded university. If you feel otherwise, I respect that, but my view on that issue has been set for more than a decade now.

(If, OTOH, you are simply saying that Nichols could have handled the situation better, there are a number of ways that he could have done things better from a PR perspective.)

And, to keep this on topic, I nominate a Sir Christopher Wren-Gene Nichols presidential pairing.

I remember hearing more talk about the Walken hoax than about some of the campaigns!
