Desolation of Smaug predictions

Post by Beutlin »

[Note: I split this off from the main DoS thread - VtF]

Place your predictions for “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”!

Tomatometer (as of December 16th): 77%

North American Opening Weekend: $70,000,000

Total North American Gross: $265,000,000

World Wide Gross: $930,000,000 (after Japanese and Chinese release)

Disclaimer: I do not put much faith in the Tomatometer or any other pseudo-statistical assessment of art. But I find it funny to bet on future results.

Disclaimer: No, I am not a member of gamblers anonymous.

(I'm putting opening US gross slightly lower than AUJ's because I suspect less people will pay the HFR premium this time around.)

And I'm putting it higher, because I think the buzz is going to be greater (particularly after I saw that Richard Corliss of Time has already listed it as one of his top ten films of the year).

Additional predictions:

Critics will like it much better than AUJ.

Yov will like it much better than AUJ.

Elen will like it much better than AUJ (despite Tauriel).

PtB will like it even less than AUJ.

See we will! The nice thing is I have perfect confidence that you will express your honest opinion, rather than try to make your prediction come through.

Now I'll try to hate it just a little extra just to bug you.

:P

The one thing safe enough that it barely counts as a prediction: I'll really, really like Freeman. :)

For the record, I originally put 81% for the tomatometer, but I changed it in an excess of enthusiasm.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

Not from USA here and not an expert in these matters anyway. So I can't predict the NorthAmerican gross.

You can include the other two if you want.
Updated:

Tomatometer: 83% *
Worldwide gross: 1.2 billion $

Updated after seeing the TIME report.

I don't have much of a head for figures... (and I'm really not bothered how much it makes, I'm more concerned about whether it's a good film!)

Agreed
Yov will like it much better than AUJ.
Probably

Elen will like it much better than AUJ (despite Tauriel
Ya think? I really don't know...hoping for the best but not overly confident.
PtB will like it even less than AUJ.
I think PtB may possibly like it marginally better...

This one's a dead cert:

SF will LOVE it even more than AUJ...

I almost took the "much" out, but I'll tentatively stick by it, just to be hopeful.

If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.
