Erendis (from The Mariner's Wife) may well be Tolkien's most interesting female character, though perhaps not the most sympathetic.

One thing I like about Aldarion and Erendis is that it feels so completely different from anything else Tolkien wrote (when I've described it to friends their reaction is "Really, Tolkien wrote that?"), and yet it still provides an interesting window into Tolkien's broader legendarium.
