But how much of that is due to 48 fps? It didn't look distractingly bad in 24 fps to me...
I don't think so. There's just a very unnatural look to the beards (and how they connect to the dwarves' faces). Even in 24fps. Dwalin's beard, for example. Looks like one of those fake beards you buy in a joke shop.

For me, there was a significant difference between the sound work in DOS and that in AUJ. The former is far richer, and during action/ fight scenes, you hear the thuds and the thwacks in a way that might have significantly improved scenes in AUJ, like Goblintown and Into the Fire.
Saw American Hustle and don't understand the oscar buzz around it at all. It's a good film but that is mainly because of the acting. Can't see how it got into the best picture race at all.
I am predicting that 12 years a slave will win best picture and actor.
Cuaron - best director
Cinematography - Gravity
Blanchett - best actress
VfX- Gravity
Sound mixing and editing - Gravity
score -Gravity.
No idea about those silly make up and costume nominations.

The dialogue/writing is really damn good too.

The only Oscar that All is Lost was nominated for was sound editing. It is, in my opinion, a travesty that Robert Redford was not nominated for his performance.

But it is in no way imo, best picture material.
Anyway, I am probably derailing the thread here.
Apologies.
So the acting, dialogue and writing is really good. Sounds line best pic material!
But I'm rooting for Gravity and All Is Lost.
Not really. For me atleast. It is a a very suitable comedy, sure. But not a film suitable to be the best picture. Did that make any sense?
have you seen it?
Nothing for TH at the BAFTAS....losing to American Hustle for Hair & Make-up, and Gravity for VFX.

"I loved doing Stephen's makeup as the subtleties are all there, but you have to look for them--like the cold sore in his beard and his gross nails and bad teeth. It was an absolute joy to work with him."
I think someone needs to look up "subtlety."
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.
