Some of you may know that back in 1966 a film adaptation of The Hobbit was made and screened publicly in New York. Remarkably, it is now available to watch in full:
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
I actually thought some of the visuals were quite nice. But yes "WTF" covers it pretty well (although having recently seen David Lynch's "interpretation" of Dune, this doesn't shock me as badly as it would have otherwise.)
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."
I was instantly reminded of Fractured Fairy Tales. Well the animation anyway.
Which I didn't hate. They totally ravaged the story though. The Arkenstone as the point of an arrow that Bilbo used to kill Slag? No.
I kinda liked the idea of the Arkenstone as actually being heart-shaped...
...but the rest -
There is magic in long-distance friendships. They let you relate to other human beings in a way that goes beyond being physically together and is often more profound.
~Diana Cortes
I actually thought they were going to go with the idea that Bilbo had stolen the Arkenstone from Smaug/Slag's "vest" and thus created the hole in his armour, which I thought would have been a nice twist.
I had seen this little film linked on another messageboard. I rather like it. It reminds me of the cartoons I watched back in the 1960s when I was a lad.
It's faithfulness, or lack of the same, to Tolkien's story is quite another topic, however.
