The Art of John Howe - Sculptures from Middle-Earth

Post by Alatar »

http://www.wetanz.com/the-art-of-john-h ... dle-earth/
We are delighted and immensely proud to announce that John Howe, on his first-ever foray into three-dimensional representations of his world renowned Tolkien portfolio, has chosen Weta as his partner.

It has long been a dream of John's to add that extra dimension and together with his friend and Weta Workshop's Creative Director, Richard Taylor, this idea has been developed over a decade.

Guided by John's and Richard's watchful eyes, a series of incredible sculpture has been created by Daniel Cockersell, Brigitte Wuest, Eden Small and the team at Weta Workshop.

Cast in very short editions in bronze and in white metal, these fine art pieces will be cherished by discerning collectors the world over.

The first two pieces in the range will be on display and available for orders at the Weta booth (#2615) at Comic Con in San Diego, 22-26 July 2009.

Further details will be announced on this website shortly.
I imagine they'll be very pricey!

Mmmm :)

Can you guess what it is yet?

I would imagine possibly a dragon, or fell beast, from the rough shape...

That is a brilliant conception of Smaug. I hope we get to see it animated.

 Good Lord!

The sculpture is, however, absolute perfection

But even if I had the money I wouldn't spend it on a piece of artwork... :(

It seems odd that we would be getting a sneak preview of what has to be pretty much what Smaug will look like in the film
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

I doubt it actually. This is based on John Howes cover art for the book of The Hobbit.

I suspect Howe is taking the opportunity to get HIS Smaug "out there" before the Movie version eclipses it. Del Toro seems to have some very fixed ideas about what he wants from Smaug, and has passed comments about how his form should reflect his environment.

That's right purty.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

And they just keep coming...

Éowyn and the Nazgûl at the usual 10k

Gandalf's Cloak a mere snip at just under 2k

And finally, Life Size Gollum for the measly sum of just under 24k.

Yeah, life size.

This recession must be imaginary...

Didn't you get the memo, Alatar? Everything is hunky-dory now!

That life-size Gollum would make a great entryway piece. Imagine a burglar turning a corner and finding it.

I am not so sure it's quite the thing for a typical company foyer, as they suggest.

I'd work for them!

Not to nitpick but shouldn't Éowyn still be wearing her helmet?

If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

If you take about 1/3 off the NZ price you should get US dollars. Still, not exactly a bargain. It looks like all that Sideshow art was cheap at twice the price.

No the "helm of her secrecy" had already fallen from her, leaving her bright hair streaming.

If I had a lush garden with a koi-filled pond (and lots of money), I'd love to have Gollum to sit by its side! Unfortunately, I have none of the above.

It's just as well that they're not offering a lifesized Smaug. That would look just right looking down from the roof of the garage. I'd have to find the money somehow.

Opens the wallet and finds the same thing Old Mother Hubbard did . . . .

nothing. Nice looking and nicely done but for it is for sure that I am not in the intended market.
1. " . . . (we are ) too engrossed in thinking of everything as a preparation or training or making one fit -- for what? At any minute it is what we are and are doing, not what we plan to be and do that counts."

J.R.R. Tolkien in his 6 October 1940 letter to his son Michael Tolkien.

2. We have many ways using technology to be in touch, yet the larger question is are we really connected or are we simply more in touch? There is a difference.

Latest email from Weta announces Weta are thrilled to now make The Art of John Howe - Sculptures from Middle-earth available in faux bronze.

We first launched this range last month at the San Diego Comic Con. At that time, we were only able to offer a Bronze option, as we had a few unresolved issues to sort out. Fortunately these issues have been resolved, so we are now able to offer these sculptures in both Bronze and Faux Bronze.

The edition size for the Faux Bronze is limited to only 300 worldwide. Customers will also receive a beautiful 22 page hard cover book written by John Howe, Richard Taylor and leading sculptor Daniel Cockersell. The book contains original sketches from John as well as a series of stunning photographs of the sculptures and the sculpting process.

For those customers who have already ordered the Bronze option, there is further good news; our pricing will reduce as we are now able to spread the initial sculpting costs over a much greater number of pieces.

Bargain price of $621.33 NZD :D

Nope, not there yet either.
