Screenwriting the Hobbit films

Here's a fairly content-free, but still fun, tidbit regarding the writing of the films. On August 18 del Toro did an interview via satellite live from Berlin to a theatre audience in Sydney and Melbourne, hosted by Popcorn Taxi. The interview was mostly about Hellboy, but he had this to say about the writing of the Hobbit films.

Well the only thing I can say is that we are now finally and officially and merrily in progression on the scripting process. We are all actively working on it and having a grand time at it. It keeps transforming and changing and it is a ‘the most beautiful’ writing experience of my life, I’m enjoying it tremendously – and there’s bound to be news soon enough.
There is no big revelations at this stage, except to confirm that I myself will not be playing Bilbo Baggins.

Of course, one would expect him to say that it is going well. But the "most beautiful writing experience" of his life? Them's strong words, for sure.

I'm sure we'll have some more controversial items to discuss about this subject in the future.

I will see your AATBOFF and raise you a LATBOFF. Legolas will be there, mark my words. I've always said they would give him Bard's part.

Game, set, and match to Frelga. Arwen's role in these films, if she's in them, will obviously be romantic, not adventurous.

Frelga, I will bet you any amount of money that you name that Legolas will not take Bard's part in The Hobbit. There is absolutely no chance that that will happen.
