Sam quoting his Gaffer? I can't quite recall the specific quote.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
I've been nagging at it in the back of my mind, and the problem for me is, i;'s just so short—there's no pattern I can see that serves as a hint.
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

Its Sam quoting the gaffer. Hint, never look at the length of the quote, they regularly get dramatically shortened. Look at the words.

I've gathered that. But the shortened quote just has very few pegs on which to hang guesses at the original.
Gripe, gripe. In other words, you've come up with a doozy, Alatar!

"Its the job that's never started as takes longest to finish"?
(Does it count as cheating if I googled around for quotes about the gaffer? If so, my apologies!)

If that's cheating, we will never guess anything in this game.

Yov you have to come up with a quote now.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
That's hilarious! But I think I'll leave it for someone else to give the (rather obvious) answer.
"Spirits in the shape of hawks and eagles flew ever to and from his halls; and their eyes could see to the depths of the seas, and pierce the hidden caverns beneath the world."

I have 1/16th of the input required to see if I deserve to know you? Sounds like Faramir, he was the nerd in the story.

Is it a quote from someone?
