Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Yeah, I think its from The Hobbit, regarding Gandalf healing the Lord of the Eagles.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Nope, not from the Hobbit, not involving Gandalf.
I should clarify my previous answer to say that it only peripherally involves the Eagles (and one Eagle in particular). Where it says "all birds" it really does mean "all birds".

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
So is "all birds" a phrase present in the original?

Is it in the Sil?
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

Is another hint necessary?

The person being spoken to was not physically present, but still 'responded'.

The first thing that comes to mind is Beren's conversation with the ghost of Gorlim. Am I on the right track?

No. Remember the birds. And the Eagle.

My Silmarillion is rusty. If nobody else has any guesses, you may have to give another hint.
It's been high up on my "to re-read" list for ages, but I already have a huge pile of books on my bedside table to get through first.

A note for the Kindle owners who also have Amazon Prime - you can download the Sil for free, and it's a LOT more readable in that format. Even if I suspect Tolkien would have been horrified by that statement.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Hmmm? I'm Prime member, and it tells me it is $9.99 for the Kindle version.
As for another hint, the quote is a prayer of sorts, which is answered.

Was it spoken to Illuvatar?
Edit: another one for our magic word filter - the "u" needs an acute accent.

Re: The Tolkien Translation Game!
Actually, you added an extra "l". It is Ilúvatar.
As for your question, no, but arguably the next best thing.
