"Something" is just an amazing song. Anything you can riff on like that and have it still work is a classic.

I liked the new Macca number. He still has the ability to hammer out fun little pop pieces after fifty years of doing so...and he still seems to enjoy it. It's hard to argue with that, especially considering that he's rich as Croesus and doesn't NEED to.

Wow! Great stuff!

I can finally watch stuff like this now that I have a high speed wireless connection at work!

oooh. A BEATLES thread..YAY for me!!

Huge HUGE fan here. And have been, well forever.

Favorite Beatles song? Rubber Soul and Revolver...

;)

yeah yeah...I think those two albums are the best of the best for the Beatle years.

I love George Harrison's work post Beatles with the Wilburys especially.

It is hard for me to even listen to songs like "In My Life" without dropping a tear.

I only read back a few pages, so will start at the beginning and then add more.

For your pleasure oh, and mine too:

From Rubber Soul - In My Life - The Beatles, John Lennon

There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed,
Some forever, not for better,
Some have gone and some remain.
All these places had their moments,
With lovers and friends I still can recall,
Some are dead and some are living,
In my life I’ve loved them all.

But of all these friends and lovers,
There is no one compared with you,
And these mem’ries lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new.
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before,
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more.

Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before,
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more.
In my life I love you more.

Apparentley there's a new movie coming out that is "based" on Beatle songs.

All of the songs are covers.

Question: As a singer, which of the Beatles was your favorite?
I wanna love somebody but I don't know how
I wanna throw my body in the river and drown

John had the most unique voice.
Paul had the cleanest voice.
Ringo was slightly better than a barroom singer.
George had that voice steeped in Lillypudlianese.

I couldn't possibly choose.
I like them all and they are all Beatle songs so it is hard to separate that.
I know who sang what song and all, but they were still Beatle songs.
They can't be better than another in my mind, so it is impossible for me to choose one.

Honestly, I liked them best when they were harmonising.

The John/Paul/George harmonies could be glorious. The vocals-only cut of "Because" on the Love soundtrack demonstrates that. Again a case of the whole being significantly greater than the sum of the parts.

So that's three total cop-out answers. Thanks, that helps a lot.

OK, then:

I like Paul's voice better solo overall, as a singing voice. But there are more than a few individual tracks that John did where his rather more idiosyncratic voice is perfect for the material.

I will say that I think John's voice changed the most out of the 4 of them over the years. Or maybe his style changed. Or maybe both. His voice became grungier.

Bumping this to reiterate what I said earlier in this thread.
I insist everyone on the planet watch The Beatles Anthology. I want it as mandatory education worldwide.
Over the last well I re-watched this. I am amazed at how well it was put together. The interviews are insightful and you really get a glimpse of the whole Beatles mystique and evolution.

From Rubber Soul
Girl
(must have been John at the end of his time with Cynthia)
YouTube link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYl0iMSlMQg
IS THERE ANYBODY GOING TO LISTEN TO MY STORY
ALL ABOUT THE GIRL WHO CAME TO STAY?
SHE´S THE KIND OF GIRL YOU WANT SO MUCH
IT MAKES YOU SORRY
STILL YOU DON´T REGRET A SINGLE DAY

AH GIRL! GIRL! GIRL!

WHEN I THINK OF ALL THE TIMES
I´VE TRIED SO HARD TO LEAVE HER
SHE WILL TURN TO ME AND START TO CRY
AND SHE PROMISES THE EARTH TO ME
AND I BELIEVE HER
AFTER ALL THIS TIME I DON´T KNOW WHY

AH GIRL! GIRL! GIRL!

SHE´S THE KIND OF GIRL WHO PUTS YOU DOWN
WHEN FRIENDS ARE THERE
YOU FEEL A FOOL

WHEN YOU SAY SHE´S LOOKING GOOD
SHE ACTS AS IF IT´S UNDERSTOOD
SHE´S COOL OH! OH! OH!

GIRL! GIRL! GIRL!

WAS SHE TOLD WHEN SHE WAS YOUNG
THAT PAIN WOULD LEAD TO PLEASURE?
DID SHE UNDERSTAND IT WHEN THEY SAID
THAT A MAN MUST BREAK HIS BACK
TO EARN HIS DAY OF LEISURE?
WILL SHE STILL BELIEVE IT WHEN HE´S DEAD?

OH GIRL! GIRL! GIRL

Part 2 in a series of album art.
Interesting trivia point: Rubber Soul was the first pop album cover, ever, not to give the artists' name on the front. By 1965 the Fabs just didn't need to.

Bumping this thread.

Someone asked who was the favorite vocalist, I am pulled between John and George. John just has a style, a look when he sings that I really like, his voice is in his throat when he vocalises, different and edgy.

George is basic, simple...but musically, he is so distinct and varied. Combined, he could on every other day be my favorite. Certainly after the break up, he moved right into number one for me.

I bumped the thread to see if anyone has seen the Beatles tribute band, 1964? I had the pleasure to see them in Canada last May and was blown away. If you squint your eyes, they look very much like them and on many songs sound JUST like them

On March 27th, I will get to see them again in Portland, OR.

1964 The Tribute, for the website and a sample.

If anyone ever gets the chance, go and see this. It is worth the 30 or 40 bucks.

Actually, as I get older I find that the Boys' vocal magic shines brightest not with any of the lead vocalists but in their harmony singing- not only tight and expressive, but innovative, and generally created by ear (none of them had a lick of formal training).

rwhen, I haven't seen 1964, but I did see Beatlemania, on Broadway (upwards 30 years ago).

soli, I agree with you. The harmonies epitomized what made the Beatles the Beatles. The whole was greater than the sum of the parts.

Another note, from listening last night to the Help! album in headphones: good golly, Ringo was a fantastic drummer- but you have to make an effort to listen to his subtly brilliant drum tracks, since he was never a bombastic egotist like, say, (the overrated) Bonham. In fact, I'd be inclined to say that the three frontmen were never more than competent instrumentalists, whereas Mr Starkey was one of the greats.

It's probably my favourite Beatles song, and what's even better is that in our wind band beatles medley arrangement the French horns get the first 8 or so bars as a solo
