Star Trek: Into Darkness

Post by Lalaith »

So who else saw the long, 3D trailer? :woohoo:

Any thoughts yet on who Benedict Cumberbatch is playing?

Hidden text.
I'm not convinced he's Khan, but I think he's someone in the Khan storyline. The trailer today made it seem like perhaps he's a doctor. He tells a grieving father that he can make his little girl better. ?? So a geneticist? The geneticist who created Khan and his kind?

My friend's husband suggested the Star Fleet guy that Khan kills in TOS episode. Harrison?

Or maybe he is Khan. ??
It was pretty awesome in 3D, I have to say. :D

And lots of eye candy.

(Benedict looks much hotter in this movie than he does in Sherlock, imo.)

And probably in The Hobbit.;)

Cumberbatch has indicated in an interview he is not Khan.

I'm not surprised. Cumberbatch is neither Mexican, like Ricardo Montalbán, nor Sikh, as the name Khan Noonien Singh suggests.

I don't know. I hear he really breathes fire in The Hobbit.
If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life.

I saw a new clip last night. I cannot find it, though, so I will have to ask for my friend to get it from her son. (Her son, husband, and I are totally geeking out over this movie. :D)

Anyway, I am even more certain now who Cumberbatch is playing. (And if he's not, then they're doing a good job trying to make you think he is playing a certain character.)

I'll post the clip here once I get the link.

Hmm, I wonder if the new movie will make sense without watching the old one...

I'm pretty sure it will. Though I thought the first one was great fun, and I would recommend it for its own sake.

But even if you haven't seen it, the story's still about Kirk and Spock and McCoy and Scotty, pop-culture icons in this country for almost 50 years now. Even if you've never seen any of the old shows, you probably already know everything you need to know to tell them apart. The actors have changed, but the characters are still the same people (maybe younger and with rougher edges).
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

Thanks, Lali! I liked that. A trailer for people who might go to this for something other than 'splosions.

I like the trailer, but I don't see what about it confirms that Cumberbatch's character is actually Khan.

Mild spoiler, given Jewel's and Alatar's outbursts above. :D

It's the reference to 72.

Now, like I said, they're going to some lengths to mislead us if Cumberbatch is not Khan. 72 is the number of superhumans in Space Seed (TOS), the episode with Khan.

That's pretty sketchy evidence, in my opinion, particularly since if I recall correctly in the original episode, only some of the 72 had survived the deep freeze.
