When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows,
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes The Rose.

I'm not big on picking favorites or making comparisons. I liked all of the episodes of each season. My temptation would be to say "The Last Vow" but that is only because it is the one that I watched most recently. I was pleased that my sense of Mary from the previous episodes was confirmed, and I very much liked the way the built up to the episode through the previous two.Smaug's voice wrote:V - favorites?(

Maybe the problem wasn't with season 3 ... .
Sorry, couldn't resist. However, I certainly did not find the quality at all reduced from the first two seasons.

Magnussen was great, but his plot line was undercooked.
I'm with SV on the OTTness. There was a lot of it in S3, and it grated. I just got tired of the "Sherlock formula" of rapid eye movements, fast-talking and quirky camera trickery being used as a means of displaying intelligence (and in S3, they used it as shorthand far too much). There are subtler and more interesting ways of showing his wit and intuition.
Looking forward to next season, though.

I agree there are more interesting ways - for instance the "Liberty Inn" in the Baskervilles was brilliant.Passdagas the Brown wrote:I just got tired of the "Sherlock formula" of rapid eye movements, fast-talking and quirky camera trickery being used as a means of displaying intelligence (and in S3, they used it as shorthand far too much). But I still love this "Sherlock forumla". As well as the exploration of his Mind-palace, which was one of the most breathtaking things I have seen on TV. The series literally delves into Sherlock's mind and shows us the logic, something that is missing in the books. (which also I love)

I think they leaned on the tropes more in S3, but I also think they played with the character himself in many ways...putting him into the dreaded character arc, as opposed to letting him stay more or less static (as the ACD original was). Tricky to get right--change too much and it's not the same character, change too little and it's pointless.
