Best Classic Rock Live Albums

Post by Holbytla »

I'll list some obvious (to me) albums to start off.

In no particular order, but live albums I consider essential to classic rock;

One More From The Road - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Live Bullet - Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band
Get Yer Ya Ya's Out - The Rolling Stones
The Song Remains The Same - Led Zeppelin
Moonflower - Santana (has a few studio tracks included)
The Last Waltz - The Band
Blow Your Face Out - The J. Geils Band
Live At Leeds - The Who

That works.

Although if you want to list Un-Plugged things, I would go with 10,000 Maniacs and Led Zeppelin.

Hmmmmm...

Peter Frampton -- Frampton Comes Alive

The Allman Brothers -- Live at Fillmore East

The Who -- Live at Leeds

And anything live by Bruce Springsteen (can't recall an album name, but surely there's been one)

Concert for Bangladesh--the first big "cause" concert/album I can think of. It also happens to have some great tracks. George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, Ravi Shankar, Billy Preston.

Oh, definitely the Concert for Bangladesh! The Concert for George (Harrison) is another worthy contender.

Talking of Bob Seger...Nine Tonight, recorded in Detroit & Boston 1980

Queen - Live Magic - Wembley/Knebworth/Budapest 1986

Wampus - Springsteen's 5 LP box set Live/1975-85

and Wings Over America (triple live album from 1976)

Folsom Prison - Johnny Cash
How the West Was Won - LZ
Live at Leeds - The Who
Under a Blood Red Sky - U2
Unplugged - Clapton

I can't remember Thin Lizzy's......

Does Leonard Cohen in London Count? Does Cash count?

Yeah Holby said The Band... :D And I agree with that too. The Last Waltz

Cash definitely counts, more so than Cohen IMO (just for the purpose of the category, not comparing them as artists).

One could argue live compilations of assorted shows (the Wings and the Springsteen collections for example) aren't the same as albums recording a single great live performance and the special character that one show had. But that would be nitpicking. :D

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense. The album is good, but the video is perhaps one of the most visually striking live concerts ever filmed. David Byrne said that music had a visual aspect and I think he really nailed it with that show. I highly recommend it - if you've never watched it you should.

Some others that haven't been mentioned yet:

Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsies
Bob Marley - Babylon By Bus
Little Feat - Waiting For Columbus
Yes - Yessongs
Rush - Exit ... Stage Left

I'm more partial to Live Rust myself, but I do like the fact that the title for Rust Never Sleeps was taken from a slogan for Rust-Oleum paint.

Live Rust is good too. Young likes playing live and it shows.

All good albums and I have some of them. Thanks for the contributions.

I can add a couple.

I had the pleasure of seeing the J. Geils Band a couple of times (once with Tom Petty as the opening act) and to this day I have yet to see a band perform with more energy or one that got a better reaction from the audience.

Hence;

Blow Your Face Out - The J. Geils Band
Full House - The J. Geils Band

Oh and I was at the Bob Seger concert when they recorded that album in Boston. Right up there with Geils in terms of energy and crowd reaction.

I just remembered one of my all-time favorites, from a band you've probably never heard of.
Renaissance: Live from Carnegie Hall (a double album from 1976)
