Bones

Post by MithLuin »

The TV show...I like it :)

My roommate watches it. In general, I watch TV only when the people I am living with turn on the TV and watch something. Don't get me wrong, I like watching TV, and can do so for hours on end. I just seldom initiate. Mostly, I watch movies, not TV shows, if I control the remote.

There have been a few exceptions. In early high school, I'd watch Star Trek: The Next Generation. It came on at dinner time. My mom kinda hated that, and I don't blame her; it was disruptive. But yes, I was definitely the one who knew what time it came on, what station, and turned on the TV (we didn't have cable, so we got about 3 stations - not the one that carried ST:DS9, so I've never watched that.)

Likewise, CSI was all me, until my sister took a liking to it. I lost interest eventually.

But anyway, my roommate likes Buffy and Angel, so of course she likes Bones. I watched a few episodes with her, and figured out I liked it, too, so I've been watching it online over the past week.

I don't like it unreservedly. Some of the way they play with the techno-babble/social awkwardness is...cliche or silly. But for a general audience, I suppose it works. Some of their inspiration is obviously based on real world stuff, which again, I am ambivalent about - there is a Laci Peterson episode as well as a Blair Witch Project episode. The jailed serial killer Epps so wishes he were Hannibal Lecter or Ted Bundy. Still, no different from CSI, which used the RI nightclub burning down and other similar news events.

But part of what makes it so cool is that they do deal with some things that are silly in most crime shows. One - the budget. Your average crime lab does not have funding for all the cool gadgets...but the 'Jeffersonian' is basically the Smithsonian - it's a high-end research institute with all sorts of grants. Of course they have gadgets ;). Two - what are the chances that you end up with a badly degraded body every week? Not high - unless you are willing to travel all over the country/world as a specialist. And in case there isn't a case, there's always the backlog of unidentified WWI soldiers or such. So, the working environment is at least...plausible.

And the characters are very cool. Unfortunately, my favorite is Zach Addy, and even though I'm only part way through season 2, I know his future is...not good. So, I'll just enjoy him while I can.

But obviously the real draw is the relationship between Booth and Brennan. They are quite interesting as partners, and the undercurrent of romantic tension doesn't seem so soap-operay. Their conversations are always worth listening to.

Anyway....anyone else watch this show?

Yes - I've watched it since the beginning and I really enjoy it
I love forensic dramas, and this one is a bit different - one of the best with both drama and humor, even if some parts are extremely graphic and not for those with a weak stomach.

I particularly enjoy seeing the relationship build between Booth & Brennan, and the spisodes where the characters' insecurities/problems are depicted and dealt with in different ways.

The series has grown funnier, deeper, and more richly layered with each season. All the characters are lovable, witty and humorous and have such great chemistry.
There is magic in long-distance friendships. They let you relate to other human beings in a way that goes beyond being physically together and is often more profound.

Graphic bothers me not at all, so it seems 'normal' to me that the characters would be having their light-hearted conversations while someone is, for instance, boiling a skull. That juxtaposition isn't done heartlessly, but is kinda like how nurses can talk about gross stuff while eating and it doesn't bother them, whereas other people would lose their appetite. And often they do have someone like Booth react with some level of disgust, or Cam correct people for being so cavalier around human remains. So, it's not...disresptful, even if it is...quirky.

The humor and chemistry is top of the list for me, too. It's just funny, in a witty banter kind of way. And, of course, there is plenty of depth to it, so characters actually get upset when they kill a bad guy or have to deal with a betrayal. Everything is not just neatly swept under the rug at the end of the episode.

Some favorite moments - Zach being devastated that some of his flesh-eating beetles will be killed: "They have names" (He's also the one who seems least concerned that he is handling human remains.) Hodgins stumbling over calling himself 'King of the Lab' at the insane asylum. Brennan constantly harrassing Booth for permission to carry a gun. Booth bringing up LotR (condescendingly, but still). Brennan conceding to Booth's argument when he describes why fetishism is 'crappy sex' (clip). How upset Hodgins is when the security people deem him 'harmless' - and how Booth comments that getting dragged away by Men in Black is a dream come true for him when it happens. Brennan's frequent insensitivity/directness, as well as the bad habit of the squints to tell people information (blurt it out, really) before it is prudent to do so. The constant interpretations put on things - explaining the science in terms Booth will understand ('ungal' means someone gnawed on the bone, etc), pointing out what Brennan missed about pop culture, or explaining to Zach that in this case, 'being in a pickle' or 'having your cake and eating it too' is basically 'Schrodinger's cat.'

I have now caught up with most of the episodes (some of the season 4 ones left to watch), and I have to hold onto hope that Zach will be back [there is a rumor he'll make an appearance in the season finale, but there's obviously a lot of other things going on in that.]

I watch it, but my TV watching has taken a nosedive since I started school, so I am behind a bit.
