Both Vess (the original illustrator) and Gaiman are happy with the result. It's different in some important plot details from the book (we've never seen THAT happen before) but Gaiman worked some with the screenwriter, and so the changes have his blessing, if not his imprimatur, to them.
And Michelle Pfeiffer looks as good as she did in LadyHawk, 20 years ago.

Saw it Saturday, and I recommend it. Do not be dismayed by the poor box office showings, it is up against three more typically Hollywood blockbuster type fares at the moment, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Simpsons, and Rush Hour 3. It still has a 73% fresh rating over at Rottentomatoes. In my mind, Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro were two of the highlights, and the scenery is drop dead, knock your socks off gorgeous.
My rating, overall a B+. Danes could have been better, she seemed a bit wooden and snarky at times, the movie suffers from a few pacing issues, but overall, great fun if you want escapist fare and entertainment.

The wife and I saw it last night. We both loved it and will buy the DVD when it comes out. It did remind me a lot of The Princess Bride in its tone, except this was a big fantasy movie where TPB was a small fairy tale. Since I love TPB, this is a good thing. I had only a few minor quibbles with the film, which I won't bother to mention, because they're minor.
Overall, the movie was fun, and even heartwarming. As Ax said, a perfect date movie.
And I want a ship like Capt. Shakespeare's!
When I win the lottery, I'm building me one of those.

I don't really see the similarity between Princess Bride and Stardust, I have to say. Maybe a very broad similirity, as both feature love stories in a fantasy setting with swordfighting and other swashbuckling stuff.
No matter, not everyone has to see things the same way!
I like both movies a lot, in any case.
