101 Most(?) Important Questions for Harry Potter 7 Survey

Post by TheWagner »

:devil:The 101 Most(?) Important Questions for Deathly Hallows:devil:
(and Possible Answers).

Some of you might have seen this elsewhere, but I thought that I would post it here, too. In the next post, you will find a list of 101 "big questions" for Deathly Hallows (Harry Potter VII), and possible answers. (Note that there are some general demographic questions in at the end: we do not ask for your credit card numbers, but feel free to send me those as a private message... 8))

The third post gives my answers. I put that there so that you will see the format for answering them again. (Yes, they are in the instructions: however, this survey was put together by multiple people who have taught at different levels, so we know that instructions will be ignored! :D). Just follow that, and my computer (and it's person) will be happy.....

If it all seems to much, then post some of you answers initially. However, when you finish the survey, then please edit your initial post so that all of your responses are in one post!

If there are questions, send me a private message or post them on a separate thread that I am setting up for questions about the survey.

As I noted, this set of questions and possible answers was put together by committee. Numerous people contributed to it. We have tried to allow for as many Harry Potter ideas as we can, even a few that none of the people putting together this survey buy. After all, our interest is, what are the general thoughts?

This also is going to be posted on one or two Harry Potter centric newsgroups. So, if you run into it elsewhere, then answer it only here or there.

Here is the key to the color coding and any symbols, as well as how to provide answers.

Key:
  • Blue: "Chekovian" questions, where the books explicitly wave the questions in front of us or hinted at possible answers via clues or foreshadowing.
  • Violet: questions that arise naturally but not explicitly from the books.
  • Red: questions arising from Rowling's comments, interviews, web-page, etc.
  • Green: demographic questions that give an idea about the type of people who think particular things. (These do not count towards 101 total, so no wise donkey comments!). Do NOT check multiple answers there: instead, check the one that is "most" true or closest to being true if there is some question.
When answering:
  • for "MARK ALL THAT APPLY": do NOT contradict yourself!; those will be bounced.
  • &/ = and/or; that is, either or both might be true, but you think that at least one of them is.
  • to provide a single answer, type in one line (say) 1. b (number 1, period, space, 'b') to answer "b" for question 1.
  • to provide multiple answers, type in one line (say) 3. b c (number 3, period, space, 'b', space, 'b') to answer "b & c" for question 3.
  • if you are truly undecided on a question that does not allow for 2+ responses, then enter (say) "1. a/b" My program will read the '/' as an 'or' and tally this as half a vote for 'a' and half a vote for 'b.' Do not add any "or" or "either" or anything like that: '/' will suffice!
  • PLEASE DO NOT ADD COMMENTARIES! (I know how hard it is to resist, believe me; but it will make my life a LOT easier!) If you have comments, then by all means raise them on the Harry Potter discussion thread! After all, good questions engender more questions! (Or so my old advisor once told me; that, and never take a wooden nickel from a house-elf......)

So, have it! :pccrash:
Shown the gun? Then shoot it! But remember that one shot has many effects.....

  1. The link between Harry and Voldemort is due to:
    1. the "bit" of Voldemort that is in Harry.
    2. a Protego Charm somehow cast there in the backlash of Lily's sacrifice.
    3. Lily's soul (or some essence thereof) split between the two from the backlash of Lily's sacrifice.
    4. Lily's soul (or some essence thereof) imprinted on the two from the backlash of Lily's sacrifice.
    5. something still different (but that will be clarified).
    6. something that will not be revealed.
  2. The "bit" of Voldemort in Harry (CoS, Chap. 18 ) is:
    1. a piece of Voldemort's soul accidentally put there in the backlash of Lily's sacrifice.
    2. some hitherto untold aspect of the mind or magic that is unlinked to the soul put there in the backlash of Lily's sacrifice.
    3. something still different (but that will be clarified).
    4. not really there:it will be shown that Dumbledore was wrong about this.
    5. something that will not be revealed.
  3. Harry's Scar proves to be handy (PSS Chap. 1) because [MARK ALL THAT APPLY]:
    1. it holds a piece of Voldemort's soul, which would be bad for Voldemort.....
    2. it will once again warn Harry of Voldemort's presence in a key situation.
    3. it will permit Harry to perceive Voldemort's thoughts/memories again once Harry learns to overcome Voldemort's occlumency.
    4. it won't: Dumbledore just says stuff like that!
  4. "...but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not...."; the power of love is:
    1. to bring back key dead characters (Dumbledore, Sirius, James, Lily, Qui-Gon, etc.) at key moments.
    2. a love version of Avada Kedavra.
    3. to let Harry take advantage of the "love" room in a way that Voldemort cannot.
    4. to prevent Voldemort from using legilimency on Harry in some key moments (thus closing Harry's mind).
    5. some other specific act of love-powered magic.
    6. not any specific magical act, but Harry's ability to love will generate important active and psychological support in key moments &/ allow him to make the choices necessary to beat Voldemort, whereas Voldemort's inability to love has the opposite results; after all, love is all you need (love is all you need).
    7. not relevant to the plot or story, but a good source of some fanfic worthy snogging scenes geared towards taking advantage of Dan Radcliffe's Equus role.
    8. not relevant at all: Dumbledore's interpretation of the prophecy (or the prophecy itself) was wrong.
  5. "... neither can live while the other survives...."; to survive but to not live means:
    1. they are deprived of meaningful things of life while the other survives (e.g., what is life without your love?).
    2. both are deprived a proper Afterlife while the other survives.
    3. something still different (but that will be clarified).
    4. nothing at all, it's just poetic license.
  6. Harry "belongs to" Voldemort (HBP, Chap. 28 ) because Voldemort has:
    1. figured out where a piece of his soul is.
    2. had enough and now wants to kill Harry personally.
    3. realized that because he regenerated using Harry's blood, Harry's death will mean his death.
    4. that sort of personality.
    5. not: Snape lied about that!
    6. a reason that will not be revealed.
  7. Harry defeats Voldemort by:
    1. discovering a "love" version of Avada Kedavra.
    2. using Sectumsempra on Voldemort.
    3. returning to Hogwarts and learning the necessary spells.
    4. sacrificing himself (either taking Voldemort with him, or invoking blood/soul/etc. links).
    5. trying to sacrifice himself, but the act paradoxically is the one thing that saves him (Instant Karma's gonna get you!)
    6. making some other noble, love-inspired choice that catches the loveless Voldemort off-guard.
    7. the link between Harry & Voldemort results in Voldemort killing himself when killing (or attempting to kill) Harry.
    8. some completely different way (but that will be clarified).
    9. letting Neville (the true Chosen one) do so.
    10. he doesn't: Voldemort wins in the end.
  8. Harry's glasses " are the clue to his vulnerability", which means that:
    1. they are somehow connected to Lily's eyes.
    2. they make him more susceptible to legilimancy.
    3. they make him less susceptible to legilimancy.
    4. they interfere with Harry seeing things for what they really are sometimes.
    5. when Voldemort looks through them, he just sees a blur!
    6. JKR was making allusions a la Clark Kent and Superman, not about superpowers! (Ergo, it won't be clarified further.)
  9. ".... until you learn to keep you mind shut ...." (HBP Chap. 28 ); Harry finally learns Occlumency from:
    1. Lupin.
    2. Aberforth.
    3. Snape.
    4. Draco.
    5. Hermione.
    6. someone else.
    7. actually, Harry already knows how to do it from Occlumency lessons, he just has to practice it.
    8. nobody; Harry won't be an occlumens by the end of the book.
  10. "For a fleeting instant, Harry thought he saw a gleam of something like triumph in Dumbledore's eyes. But the next second, Harry was sure he imagined it." The effect of Voldemort regenerating with Harry's blood was (will be) to:
    1. provide Voldemort's downfall on its own.
    2. provide Voldemort's downfall through the mix of Harry having a piece of Voldemort's soul and Voldemort having Harry's blood
    3. provide Harry's salvation through the mix of Harry having a piece of Voldemort's soul and Voldemort having Harry's blood
    4. allow Harry to survive his self-sacrifice.
    5. help Harry destroy Horcruxes.
    6. remove Voldemort's soul fragment from Harry.
    7. mean that Harry's death will mean Voldemort's death.
    8. do nothing; Dumbledore really was evil and glad see Voldemort immunized.
    9. do nothing; it will be confirmed that Harry did just imagine this.
    10. this will not be revealed.
  11. Voldemort's fate is:
    1. death.
    2. to become an embittered ghost wishing for death.
    3. the fate worse than death threatened by Dumbledore (OotP Chap. 36; see below).
    4. actually, b=c!
    5. reformation.
    6. victory!
  12. Voldemort "finally gets the legroom for which he has been aching during all those years in exile," which means : [MARK ALL THAT APPLY, BUT DO NOT CONTRADICT YOURSELF!
    1. a relentless pursuit of Harry.
    2. outright attempts to overthrow the Ministry of Magic.
    3. outright attempts to takeover at Hogwarts
    4. just general mayhem, death, etc.
    5. establishing his own home base rather than skulking in the shadows.
    6. nothing really, it is just nice to have legs again.
    7. a several city tour as his alter-ego, David Bowie ("the return of the thin white Duke....").
  13. Voldemort's interest in Hogwarts that led him to seek the Defense Against Dark Arts job was : [MARK ALL THAT APPLY]
    1. just to find relics for Horcruxes, and (the interest) no longer is really there.
    2. to safeguard Horcruxes he hid there as a student, and thus still is there.
    3. because he made Hogwarts itself a Horcrux, and thus still is there.
    4. to create an army of dark wizards more swiftly, but no longer is really there.
    5. as above, but no longer there.
    6. to learn magical secrets besides that do not involve Horcruxes, and still is there.
    7. as above, but no longer there.
    8. something that will not be discussed or clarified further.
  14. In the end, Harry:
    1. sacrifices his life to destroy Voldemort.
    2. survives, but as a bitter husk of himself due to the deaths of so many close friends.
    3. survives & marries Ginny.
    4. survives & marries Hermione after Ron and Ginny both turn out to be Death Eaters.
  15. The fact that Harry and Voldemort have brother wands means:
    1. Priori Incantatem will happen again when they duel.
    2. nothing; they will duel, but the wands won't lock this time.
    3. nothing; they will duel, but Voldemort will use another wand.
    4. nothing; they will duel, but Harry will use another wand.
    5. nothing; Harry and Voldemort will not duel.
  16. The final confrontation will be at:

    5. Hogwarts (no symmetry, but we like the place).
    6. wherever Harry catches up to Nagini.
    7. wherever Voldemort finally catches up to Harry.
    8. somewhere else altogether.
  17. The confrontation(s) between Harry and Voldemort is (are) precipitated by: [MARK ALL THAT APPLY]

    2. Dobby &/ Kreacher continuing to track Draco, which ultimately leads Harry to Voldemort.

Whoa! I am both extremely impressed (super kudos to all who participated in the creation of the survey) as well as extremely daunted and intimidated. So  and :scarey: (and :help: )
And here I thought I'd have nothing to do during my 12 hour layover in LA. The big question is should I attempt in now or wait until I've finished rereading the books in preparation for Deathly Hallows. (pre and post reading may be an interesting comparison...)
Home is behind, the world ahead
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadow til the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight
Mist and shadow, cloud and shade
All shall fade, all shall fade
