Favorite artists - contribute!

Post by yovargas »

I'm a total novice when it comes to art but in the past few years my interest in the subject has been continually increasing. To broaden my horizons, I was curious to see what some of your favorite works by some of your favorite artists are. I'm particularly interested in hearing about some that might be a bit lesser known - we all know about your Van Goghs and Monets (and I think I've heard of some guy called Whistler), who/what do you love that not everybody might be familiar with? Which is not to say you can't share the Van Goghs and Monets too! :) (No Whistlers though ;))

I thought of this because I decided to put a picture by surrealist Yves Tanguy in my sig (which I can't get to work at the moment  ). I found him in a book on Surrealism, which I was looking through primarily because I love Salvador Dali. His style reminds me a lot of Dali's, actually, but his paintings are more fully abstract. They are kinda like abstract sculptures placed in one of Dali's infinite landscapes. I find them wonderfully evocative and misterious. A couple favorites:

Another artist I discovered this year was Kandinsky, who seems well-known in the art-loving crowd but probably not the mainstream. I discovered him when somebody (forget who) had him in a sig for a while. :) Kandinski went through a lot of styles, but the period that I really enjoy is a period I read someone call "geometric abstract" (I think). I think it's something about the way the lines flow through the vibrant colors that I find very joyful, almost celebratory. A couple favorites:

(lemme know if anybody wants me to change these to links)

As you might have guessed, I tend to enjoy things skeweing towards the abstract more than realistic depictions of stuff. Oh, and Starry Night is probably my favorite painting. :)

Well, yovargas, I hate those pictures by Tanguy. They are exactly the kind of pictures I would run a mile to avoid seeing.

But if you like them, that's fine with me. The other ones are worse. But then, they're not mine either. For which I am grateful. :D

You say they are evocative. What is it they "evoke" in you?

In me they evoke disaste and annoyance. I don't want to see those worlds, I don't want to imagine what those worlds might be like. They make me look away really fast. Dali's pictures do the same thing, although I can recognize something in Dali's pictures. Just what, I'm not sure. I don't LIKE his world, either. I think these pictures are nightmarish.

Now, we are good enough friends that you won't be annoyed at me, you will be kind and explain yourself. Tell me why you like them, why they fascinate you, why you think them mysterious.

Please?

I like the Kandisky but only in the "Art is what matches the drapes" sense.

I can tell you what they evoke, dear vison, but explaining why they evoke it would be like trying to explain why one melody is more beautiful than another. :)

Oooooooh...

Here is someone not well known at all, and I imagine you will find him impronounceable as well. :P

Ferdynand Ruszczyc, 1870-1936

Many of his paintings hang in Warsaw's National Museum, which is managed by his grandson.(I find that little fact very neat.)

This is probably my favourite, because it's so fantasy-like. It is called Nec Mergitur, or the Sailor's Legend.

This is his most famous. The colours are a bit off...

and I also am fond of this one. It's quite a small one:

What a great thread, yov!

Unfortunately, I am almost completely ignorant about art, but I definitely am interested in learning more.

Can't someone please convince Ber to come back and share a bit more of her knowledge about art?

I've seen the one with the oxen before, and I love it.

The ship one is scary.

The one with the trees is LOTRish.

That's what I love about the ship, it looks almost like something out of Aliens. :P

I'm not an art scholar by any means, but there are a few artists that I enjoy.

I like a lot of the Pre-Raphaelite's paintings. I like their realisitc painting style and I like the symbolism and myth evoked in them. Examples:

I also like William Bouguereau. I have heard that most true art critics hate his work, but I don't let that phase me! :D I love his subject matter and his very realisitc style. Examples:

And just to shake it up a bit...I also like M. C. Escher a lot. I love his designs and imagination. I could stare at his pictures for hours trying to figure them out. Examples:

Fabulous stuff, folks! What's the name of that first one, Ber? I was looking for a larger version to see it more clearly.

Soooo, I know a lot of people are turned off by the modern art stuff, but surely I'm not the only one around here who enjoys it? Right? Right??

yov... it's "Snowstorm: Hannibal and his Army Crossing the Alps". Turner wrote a poem to go with the painting, and one of the lines is "While the fierce archer of the downward year...", from where I mercilessly stole my usual sig.

For you, yov; some of my favourite modern artists:

Christian Boltanski

Image
Rachel Whiteread, Monument

Image
Christo, The Gates

I think you would like De Chirico:

And my favourite Magritte:

I used to like Tanguy... I've grown a bit weary of Surrealism, though, and dislike Dali, but I still find some Surrealists very intriguing.

If you like Kandinski, try Matisse; more figurative, but I love his strong colours:

I also like Edmund B. Leighton a lot. Examples:

And yov, I don't know if Hieronymus Bosch is considered modern art, but it is certainly different...and I like his works. Here is his most famous in three parts:
