Well, many thanks for this, bt!

I have no idea why the paintings were in Glasgow. But what matters is that they are here now, and anyone who can possibly go to see them (I cannot, unfortunately) should certainly make the effort.

I would love to see the "Ten O'Clock" notes perhaps as much as the art itself.

The last time I made up my mind to make a pilgrimage to see a Whistler (it was the "Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket") I made a pilgrimage to Detroit, roughly two thousand miles away, only to find that the museum had placed it in storage.

Philistines.

Those who want to read the Ten O'Clock Lecture, as well as transcripts from the Whistler/Ruskin trial and other juicy items, would do well to order "The Gentle Art of Making Enemies," by Whistler himself, which (I think) is available from Amazon in an inexpensive paperback version.
