AI! AI! A ChatGPT is come!
I asked for a press release about the 2024 elections in Gondor, and it came up with something serviceable but rather bland; at least until the end: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GONDOR DECLARES 2024 ELECTIONS: A QUEST FOR A NEW STWARD Minas Tirith, Gondor - February 20, 2024 - The realm of Gondor, in the wa...

That same system is I believe a canonical example of the paradox where light fines lead to more of the undesired behavior (in this case, leaving your cart in the lot instead of returning it to the corral), because it lets people feel that they've paid for the right to do it.

I'm sorry to keep pasting these but this is novel to me and I find it very funny: User: Can you compose a short (less than 500 words) fanfic about Gandalf in the Mines of Moria? ChatGPT: Title: Gandalf's Trial in the Mines of Moria Deep within the darkened halls of Khazad-dûm, Gandalf the Grey led t...

I don't think so, and when asked that question directly, it agrees. But as one can see from my edit (final quote), it has a bit of a yes man tendency.

Re: AI! AI! A ChatGPT is come!
We created a work thread to talk about AI-related issues. Naturally, I suggested naming it AI! AI! A chatbot is come! Naturally, not everyone got the joke. So I thought I'd see if ChatGPT itself could figure it out: User: A thread about artificial intelligence was named "AI! AI! A chatbot is co...

For some reason I ended up reading a discussion elsewhere about whether balrogs have wings, and someone posted this drawing, which I'd never seen before (artist is Manuel Castañón): . https://www.artstation.com/prints/art_poster/q255/flame-of-udun Image only: https://cdna.artstation.com/p/marketplac...

Re: Elon's Twitter
Dave, are you in any other social media? Despite everything, I still find my Twitter feed is the best source of information I know. Nominally, but I've given up on most of them too. It's just too frustrating having everything scattered across so many different places that are all slightly different...

Re: Elon's Twitter
I had some end-of-year time off from work and made a conscious decision to avoid online news during that period. Much to my unsurprise, I discovered during that time that I am better off without eX-Twitter, and haven't gone back.

Re: Elon's Twitter
It's well-known that public figures become corruption risks when they don't have enough money. What the X-Twitter fiasco is demonstrating is that it's almost as bad when they have so much money they don't need to care about wasting it.

Good point--*real* conservatives would take us back to the hunter-gather stage, not like these RINOs who only want to return to medieval times.

Santos's corruption is A story, but in my opinion, THE story is how someone like him wound up running for and winning office in the first place. There's some reporting today that his campaign was largely funded by the ex-wife of a Florida billionaire, but that is only the beginning of what should be...

Re: Hamas' "50th Anniversary" Attack on Israel
Whether you're talking about Israel vs. Hamas, Ukraine vs. Russia, or Democrats vs. Republicans, it's very clear the baseline is that the good guys must scrupulously obey every jot and tittle of the letter of the law even if it literally kills them, while the bad guys can do whatever the hell they w...

Re: The Russia Investigations and other Trump-related cases
I spent the morning tearing my hair out trying to get my kids to school with their delayed start and work at the same time. Do I get to tell my boss it's an undue hardship having to work during the school week, or is that just for the filthy rich?
