I mostly stick to escapist literature. I went through several Pratchetts and my last read was The Other Wind by Le Guin. Pride and Prejudice is waiting on the shelf.

He added: "Now, you know, I can't go any further in talking about it. Obviously, the United States does not have a responsibility when a sovereign country engages in something that they disapprove of."
That struck me as quite an astonishing statement, coming from Rumsfeld.

Scribbles wrote:What hand could raise this height so far,
and fill this depth with a carpet of stars
that sparkle more fair than any diamond of earth,
some dying, some living, some just giving birth.

Regarding Galadriel's address to Gimli - here the language is but a tool of her wisdom and goodwill. There is Gimli, all ruffled feathers, blindfolded, insulted and none too fond of Elves to begin with. Celeborn proceeds to accuse the Dwarves, Gimli's kin, of stirring up the evil in Moria and effect...

Faramond , I loved poetry since childhood and could recite dozens of poems from memory. But the deepest emotion and experience captured in the verses were only a story that was told to me. As I grew older, fell in love, lost a friend, had a child, I began to recognize the echoes of my own heart in ...

Hunter, you can post a link to a picture file inside the tags, but the image must live on the Internet, not on your PC. Do you have a photobucket account? If not, it's free at www.photobucket.com, and you can use it to store pictures from your PC so that you can link to them from the boards. Photobu...

Hullo, Hunter, we just met the other day at the Writer's Cafe.

Hey hal!

Scirocco, I was mostly reading you in books, and I'm looking forward to reading more of you.

 did I miss anybody?

Ah yes,
SYLLY!

I can't say why, Jn. It just... grabs me somehow. Of course the translation was hastily done by me, so...

And back on topic of nature, one of my favorite lines from Pasternak:

And you cannot cross the road by the fence
Without trampling Creation...

Inded. :( How about this one, by Tsvetayeva? Used to be my #1 favorite. When the dawn is frosty By the seventh birch tree On the corner, by the church Wait, my Don Juan But alas, I swear by my betrothed and my life that here in my land there is no place to kiss We have no fountains and dry are the w...

Jn, it's not that original. :D You can read Russian? Tzvetayeva and Akhmatova - I'd adore them both and would hate to choose just one. But it's impossible to find a good English translation of Russian poetry. I really hated what was done to Pasternak in Doctor Zhivago translation, and ironic...

Oh, I see Breogan registered. There's someone I've always hoped to get to know better.

I think in the Tarzan book Cheetah was a leopard, but it's been a while. I do associate the name Cheetah with apes, but I think that's because of some (other?) fictional primate so named.

BTW, do pictures of Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan qualify as nature photos? :halo:

Honestly, I don't think anything will change in Middle-East for as long as any peace overtures are unilateral. The reality is that for a large and most violent faction the goal is not establishment of Palestinian state, but destruction of the Jewish state as an entity. Any concessions on the Israeli...

Here are some interesting cloud formations for your enjoyment (can't remember where I found the picture so can't give proper credit)

That's one of those threads where I sit in the bleachers, mouth hanging open, straining to follow the fast-flying volleys of wisdom. But Athrabeth's comment that Silmarils " created from the blessed light of the Two Trees could cause such debasement " reminded me of something I once osgoog...
