Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions
Hah, that ruling is hilarious. Don't feel like reading the full thing today, I'm guessing from that quote that they didn't bother addressing the question of whether the law's constitutional?

Re: The 4K Release of Lord of the RIngs and The Hobbit
I would pay some seriously good money to be able to create my own perfect LOTR cut, as each EE added stuff both good and bad, even if on balance I think they're mostly good. Maybe one day when I'm a billionaire I can hire some professionals to make that happen for me! There are already some fan edi...

Re: The 4K Release of Lord of the RIngs and The Hobbit
I don't expect this to actually happen, but I'd rather see a shorter "de-extended" cut of RotK that is longer than the theatrical but removes some of the more egregious EE material like the cartoon stuff with the Dead and Aragorn beheading the Mouth. I would pay some seriously good money ...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions
I'll be interested to hear it. Do you know if any lower courts or whatever (not totally sure how that would work) have already ruled on the matter?

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions
(couple x-posts; my post is about the Pennsylvania Court decision V-man linked to a couple posts up) That one was indeed a bit of a slog and I ended up only skimming most of it, but the legal argument there is more interesting or at least worth pondering than the other stuff I've seen. At least on t...

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions
I found that 21 page legal document surprisingly entertaining to read. Such a thorough, detailed accounting of the many ways their suit is a buncha bullshit.

Re: yov's 100 All-time Favorite Songs
NE - Because I love the song Creep so much I almost never like covers of it ("you're not doing it right!"), but that marching band performance was pretty cool period my main objection was that it was too short!

Re: US Supreme Court Discussions
Comparing a church to a bike shop seems genuinely bonkers. I hope they at least bothered trying to make more reasonable comparisons at some point.

Sure. But our system was built with checks and balances in mind, yet this is a major power with very little check. Far too easy to abuse without consequence.River wrote:There are non-corrupt ways to use the power. Judges and juries do muck things up and it's nice to have a corrective.

Presidential pardons are dumb. I would remove that power from the constitution if I could.

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions
Sooooo, for those of us not following this absurdity bit by bit, anybody care to provide a quick summary of where things stand right now? Is there a light at the end of the tunnel as far as getting the results officially declared and finalized?

Re: Trump's America
That's the truly scary part of that article. Some have boycotted Fox News out of anger that the network called Biden the election winner and that some of its news anchors - in contrast to its opinion show stars - have been skeptical of Trump’s fraud allegations.

Re: 2020 Election: Predictions, Results and Reactions
Can we just condemn violence and destruction period, without making it a damn us vs them contest like every f***ing thing in our society? We should all be comfortable just saying "that's bad, I condemn that", without having to try and couch it in the endless "but their side did worse!...

This isn't about how Trump used twitter. It's about how social media has affected the culture that allowed Trump to rise.

Social media was in its infancy during Obama's time. What it was in 2008 can't be compared to what it was 10 years later.RoseMorninStar wrote: Twitter was around during Obama's presidency. I'd say Twitter is certainly problematic, but it is only a vehicle for a problem.

Re: Escaping the Echo Chamber
I have never heard any Hispanic/Latino person say they were bothered by being considered a group. If there are those who feel that way, I would wager they are a miniscule minority, mostly stemming from academia.
