Escaping the Echo Chamber

I would ask whether the “humor” was being used to keep people marginalized—or having the effect of doing so—as “ethnic jokes” and jokes demeaning women’s intelligence were when I was young.

Re: Escaping the Echo Chamber

No. But my principle is to grant the benefit of the doubt to the side that’s been at a social disadvantage in the past.

Oh, yes!!! You should love them! Sandhills? They fly over in large flocks as they migrate, and they make the neatest sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EckKXUersb8 The smaller feathered dinosaurs at work yesterday were very alarmed by (and vocal about) the larger feathered dinosaur perched at t...

Re: Escaping the Echo Chamber

The problem is that when a group of people who have been the victims of such jokes for years exercise their right to object at last, this is often seen as "knee-jerk, reactionary zealotry," as if nobody ever found it necessary to object before and so why should they suddenly do so now? Whe...

Re: Trump's America

And yet—why would we ever expect this man to say or do anything except what serves his financial and legal interests and bolsters his ego?

That's observation, not calumny.

Re: 2020 Presidential Election

I am so tired of hearing about the centrists, to be honest. It wasn’t a bunch of centrists driving turnout in the recent blue wave. And I would like to see Democrats elected who are willing to govern and legislate like Democrats, not Republicans writ small. That’s how we got Social Security, Medicar...

Re: Trump's America

I honestly don’t know what/whom to hope for as a Democratic candidate in 2020. At this point 12 years ago, IIRC, nobody was seriously eying Obama. I have a much clearer idea of who I’m hoping will not run or at least will not become the nominee: Clinton, Biden, and Sanders, and I’m on the fence abou...

Re: Revisiting Rings

Planning a rewatch, so I'm glad to have these recommendations.

Only problem is, I don't own the RotK TE. I automatically bought the EE.

OtOH, it ought to be easily available streaming.

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

I still haven't seen A Quiet Place (it just sounds unbearable for me), so Bird Box may also be more than I can stand. I partly need to know that the outcome was at least somewhat OK.

Re: Trump's America

I'm not so sure. I think he's thinking of going for the Big One. Senator for two years is a convenient stepping stone.

As it proved to be for Obama.

If it's usual, people won't let themselves see it as cruel. This is why public floggings and hangings (and worse) were commonplace in Europe for centuries.

Re: The last movie you saw Thread

It's not a remake. It's a side story, about a whole group of Spider-people, and it's animated.
